About The Position

Capital Health is seeking a Medical Physicist for Radiation Oncology in Hopewell. This full-time position involves determining radiation dose distributions in patients, designing and constructing treatment aids, consulting with radiation oncologists, and managing brachytherapy procedures. The role also includes ensuring correct physics billing, following radiation safety programs, and working closely with the Chief Medical Physicist and Radiation Safety Officer. Responsibilities extend to reviewing and developing policies, providing in-services, participating in committees, and ensuring compliance with regulatory bodies like the NRC, Joint Commission, and the state of New Jersey. The physicist will perform quality management programs, calibrate therapy equipment, conduct acceptance testing for new equipment, and maintain records for regulatory agencies. They will also participate in equipment planning, program planning, marketing, staff review, and budget preparation, evaluate new technologies, and assist with department policies. The role serves as a focal point for machine maintenance and repair, commissions new radiation equipment, provides technical direction, and acts as a resource for shielding requirements. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master’s or doctoral degree in medical physics, physics, or a related field.
  • Two years post-residency experience preferred.
  • ABR board eligible or certified; applicable NJDEP approval required before independently performing regulated activities.
  • Proficiency in treatment planning, excellent communication skills, ability to handle multiple priorities, and good conflict resolution skills.
  • Brachytherapy and CyberKnife experience.
  • IMRT and IMRT Q/A experience.
  • Completion of a CAMPEP-accredited therapy medical physics residency.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of CyberKnife is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Performs the determination of radiation dose distributions in patients undergoing treatment using computerized dosimetry planning through the CyberKnife, Brachytherapy and Eclipse planning system (for 3D and IMRT/VMAT), or through direct radiation measurement.
  • Accomplishes this task through direct supervision of the dosimetrists, and/or direct hands on hands-on planning.
  • Performs the design and construction of patient treatment aids or special devices (blocks, compensators, molds)
  • Consults with the radiation oncologist's concerning patient doses and optimization of patient treatment plans and delivery.
  • Directly involved in all aspects of brachytherapy: radiation protection surveys of patients, maintenance of source inventory and storage survey, calibration of sources, procurement of sources, source/applicator preparation, documentation and quality assurance monitoring.
  • Ensures correct physics billing procedures.
  • Follows the radiation safety program for the radiation oncology department.
  • Works closely with Capital Health's (CH) Chief medical physicist radiation safety officer.
  • Reviews, develops and approves department policies and procedures related to radiation safety and radiation oncology physics.
  • Provides in-services on radiation safety to radiation oncology staff and other hospital staff as required.
  • If requested, serves as a member of the Radiation Safety Committee, and the department's CQI Committee.
  • Participates in NRC and State of NJ licensing surveys and inspections.
  • Communicates with these regulatory bodies for amendments, renewals and inspection deficiencies.
  • Follows radiation protection procedures for compliance with federal, state and Joint Commission regulations, including review of ALARA and quality management programs.
  • Performs the quality management program that involves the use of external beam radiotherapy equipment, CT simulators, ultrasound equipment, computerized treatment planning system, IMRT (using MapCheck or Portal Dosimetry) and therapeutic radioisotopes as per regulatory bodies.
  • Exercises discretion and judgement to calibrate therapy equipment in a manner suitable for accurate radiation dose delivery.
  • Performs the acceptance testing of new equipment and treatment devices.
  • Maintains proper records necessary for regulatory agencies such as the NRC, Joint Commission and the state of New Jersey.
  • Maintains compliance and assists in survey readiness with the American College of Physics accreditation process.
  • Participates in equipment planning and evaluation, program planning, marketing, staff review and budget preparation.
  • Evaluates new technologies and implements as needed.
  • Assists with the creation and review of department policies and procedures.
  • Serves as the focal point for machine maintenance and repair.
  • Performs Commissions all new radiation equipment or upon the relocation of such equipment under supervision.
  • Provides technical direction of radiation oncology staff as specified by the department medical director.
  • Serves as a resource for the department on shielding requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
