About The Position

The Baltimore VA Medical Center is seeking a Medical Physicist to join their team. This role involves the design, optimization, and technical evaluation of radiation treatment plans, ensuring precise and accurate radiation dose delivery. The Medical Physicist will also be responsible for radiation protection of patients and staff, and will consult with Radiation Oncologists and provide direction to technical staff. This position requires presence during simulations, treatment setups for SBRT/SRS and IGRT, and all times during Stereotactic Procedures (SRS, SRT, SBRT). The role includes specifying and monitoring calculation methods for MUs or treatment times, performing weekly and final chart reviews, and managing dosimetry data input into treatment planning systems. The Medical Physicist will also advise on the acquisition of radiation-producing equipment and systems, evaluate equipment for utility and performance, and determine the need for specialized dosimetry and treatment planning equipment. Consultation with clinical engineers for the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of radiation oncology equipment is also a key responsibility.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Medical Physics
  • At least 3 years of experience performing QA procedures
  • Experience in Therapeutic Medical Physics in a healthcare system that is ACR or APEx certified
  • Experience with Varian Linear Accelerators: TrueBeam with Brain Lab Accessories following standards of TG-142
  • Experience with Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) including Cone Beam CT
  • Experience with Eclipse treatment planning system
  • Experience with ARIA record and verify system
  • Experience with treatment modalities: 2D/3D Conformal, SRS, SRT, SBRT, and IMRT/VMAT
  • Experience IMRT QA: MApCheck (or equivalent)
  • Experience Client Discovery CT Simulator (or equivalent)
  • Experience using Superficial X-ray Machine
  • Successfully performed one acceptance testing on a linear accelerator
  • Successfully performed one commission of a linear accelerator for a treatment planning system
  • Board Certified in Medical Physics or Therapeutic Medical Physics by the American Board of Radiology

Responsibilities

  • Design, optimization, and technical evaluation of radiation treatment plans.

  • Presence at the machine during patient setup for SBRT/SRS and IGRT.
  • Presence at all times during Stereotactic Procedures (SRS, SRT, SBRT).
  • Specification and monitoring of methods to calculate MUs or treatment times, ensuring independent review.
  • Development and maintenance of a method for weekly and systematic review of patient charts.
  • Performing a final chart review at the end of the course of radiation treatment.
  • Data input into treatment planning systems based on measured beam data.
  • Providing information on specification and selection for the acquisition of radiation-producing machines, accessories, and computerized treatment planning systems.
  • Providing information to VA staff on timing of required maintenance of equipment.
  • Evaluation of all equipment for continued utility, appropriateness, reliable performance, age, and condition.
  • Determination of the need for, specification of, and access to dosimetry and treatment planning equipment.
  • Providing advice and consultation for the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of linear accelerators and CT simulation equipment.
  • Ensuring record and verification systems are functional.
