The Medical Office Technician provides day-to-day staffing in an outpatient clinic setting, both clinically and administratively, depending on the need of the practice. This role is accountable for performing all responsibilities of the Health Assistant (HAA) as well as clinical assistant responsibilities as appropriate based on training, education, and competency. The technician provides support for clinical and medical staff in the delivery of quality medical care and creates a positive experience for patients by welcoming and assisting them throughout the clinic. The role involves performing HAA and Clinical Assistant job duties as detailed in their respective job descriptions. Additionally, the technician performs waived and other in-house testing based on available equipment, documented training, and competency, and must be able to maintain the laboratory without supervision. Responsibilities include obtaining patient specimens using appropriate equipment and technique, verifying patient identification and orders, reviewing pertinent patient history, assessing the most appropriate blood draw site, selecting the correct needle, preparing the site, and applying appropriate pressure after venipuncture. The technician must observe safety regulations and universal precautions in the collection, processing, and disposal of laboratory specimens. They are responsible for preparing samples for transport to reference laboratories, ensuring proper labeling and order matching. Reporting abnormal or critical results to the appropriate physician/ACP or clinical team member is also a key duty. Maintaining laboratory equipment, including cleaning, performing quality control, and calibration, is required. The technician must report equipment malfunctions to the practice manager or designee and maintain required COLA and CLIA documents. They are responsible for maintaining a neat, clean, and well-stocked work area, assisting with ordering, dating, and sorting laboratory supplies, and ordering supplies from appropriate sources as needed. The role includes participating in the training of clinical staff, x-ray technicians, and physicians/ACPs in basic office laboratory procedures. Assisting nursing staff in patient care and transport to/from examination rooms, laboratory, x-ray, and waiting area is also part of the duties. Maintaining competency in all areas of responsibility, reviewing new and revised guidelines, procedures, and policies, and acquiring and maintaining knowledge of current regulatory standards are essential. The position may require travel to other Velocity Care locations.
