About The Position

This posting is to fill a current vacancy for a Medical Laboratory Technologist 2 at the PHO London Laboratory. The role involves performing testing and providing accurate and timely reporting of clinical and environmental laboratory tests as part of a team. The technologist will work within Public Health Ontario’s (PHO’s) quality policies, technical procedures, and regulatory/accreditation requirements. Additionally, the role provides technical assistance to Managers and/or Operational Lead for testing, troubleshooting, and special projects, and offers group leadership to technical and non-technical staff.

Requirements

  • Certification in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO).
  • Four (4) to six (6) years’ experience in their field of expertise.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform medical/environmental laboratory techniques/procedures.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety practices and ability to operate laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to conduct standardized medical/clinical/environmental tests and procedures.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance to technical and non-technical staff.
  • Ability to apply laboratory safety practices to ensure all safety guidelines and requirements are met.
  • Knowledge of applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements and PHO’s Code of Conduct.
  • Knowledge to ensure confidentiality is maintained when releasing test results and during discussions with clients.
  • Knowledge of computer software applications such as spreadsheet, word processing, and presentations.
  • Skills to work with automated, computer driven equipment including laboratory information systems.
  • Good oral and written communication skills: ability to write standard operating procedures, complete records, and relay technical information to users.
  • Presentation skills to provide training to technical and non-technical staff.
  • Good interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to liaise with laboratory staff and sample submitters, including health care providers, to relay laboratory test results and other information.

  • Valid Human Pathogens and Toxins Act security clearance may be required when working in the CL3 Laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory activities and work in accordance with the laboratory's management system, conducting standardized medical/clinical/environmental tests and procedures for the isolation, quantification, identification, molecular testing, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing of bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses.
  • Carry out testing using established quality assurance and control procedures, and oversee internal and external proficiency testing.
  • Report and relay results to specimen submitters, including healthcare providers, accurately, clearly, unambiguously, and objectively within acceptable turnaround times.
  • Authorize the release of laboratory test results and discuss test results with clients within College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario regulations.
  • Ensure specimens are handled and stored appropriately to protect integrity.
  • Provide oversight of day-to-day activities to a team of technical and non-technical staff, including assignment of work.
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting for method or instrument failures.
  • Assist Operational Lead with training and competency assessment of technical and non-technical staff.
  • Help ensure adherence to all safety guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain privacy and confidentiality as outlined by PHO’s corporate policies.
  • Review daily QC materials, evaluate deviations, and take appropriate actions to resolve discrepancies.
  • Lead projects and project teams, including verification and validation of equipment/methods, and provision of training and competency.
  • Support supervisor/manager with contract managers to prepare procurement documentation for equipment, goods, and services.
  • Provide oversight for evaluation and participate in vendor debrief sessions.
  • Provide input for the development of new procedures and protocols, and document final procedures and protocols.
  • Participate in annual review of procedures and protocols.
  • Participate in preparation and response to internal and external audit findings.
  • Participate in preparation of documentation related to investigation and response to non-conformances and complaints, and follow up corrective and preventive actions.
  • Perform activities to support the laboratory’s Quality Management Program, including those supporting accreditation and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform laboratory activities impartially, disclose any conflicts of interest, and do not allow commercial, financial, or other pressures to compromise work or impartiality.
  • Perform other duties or projects as assigned.
