About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs a wide range of technical, clerical, and information system procedures across Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Blood Bank, Urinalysis, and specimen procurement. Operating within established policies and quality control standards, the MLT ensures accurate, timely test results to support high-quality patient care and participates actively in the Laboratory Quality Improvement program.

Requirements

  • Active Phlebotomist License required.
  • Active Washington State Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist (MA-P) License required.

Responsibilities

  • Organize workflow and manage time effectively to complete technical tasks within established turn-around times.
  • Operate and adjust laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and computer systems to calculate, record, evaluate, and transmit test data.
  • Apply professional judgment to analyze and interpret laboratory results across all clinical sections, including Hematology, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, Serology, Blood Bank, Microbiology, and Urinalysis.
  • Identify specimen abnormalities (e.g., malignancies, bacteria, parasites, or genetic variations).
  • Maintain instruments and assigned laboratory sections as designated by the Laboratory Manager.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance, calibration, and monitoring of inventory/consumables.
  • Perform specimen collection (venipuncture, capillary draws, culture swabs) on patients of all age groups.
  • Instruct nursing staff on proper specimen collection methods and procedures.
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative analyses on human blood, body fluids (urine, spinal fluid), tissue, and cellular samples; perform blood-typing, compatibility testing, and crossmatching for transfusion services.
  • Establish, monitor, and adhere to Quality Control (QC) programs to ensure high analytical accuracy and result integrity.
  • Set up, clean, calibrate, and troubleshoot clinical instruments across chemistry, hematology, coagulation, and microbiology.
  • Provide technical information regarding test results to physicians, researchers, and care teams; guide staff on acceptable laboratory practices.
