About The Position

This is a full-time position requiring the technician to work independently performing laboratory and phlebotomy procedures. Duties include drawing blood, performing blood and body fluid testing according to established policies, collecting statistical data, interpreting quality control, documenting relevant information, and working additional or non-scheduled hours as needed. The role involves specimen processing, test performance, and reporting results, adhering strictly to laboratory procedures for specimen handling, test analysis, reporting, and record-keeping. Technicians must maintain records for proficiency testing, follow quality control policies, document all quality control activities, and perform calibrations and maintenance. They must also identify and address issues that could affect test performance or reporting, documenting all corrective actions. Additionally, the technician may perform duties of a Department Lead Lab Tech, which includes overseeing departmental tasks such as monitoring quality control and instrument function, managing test menus, new instrument setup, inventory, calibration, departmental checklists, temperature monitoring, performance monitoring of other staff, employee competency, troubleshooting, and reporting issues to the Laboratory Director.

Requirements

  • General working knowledge of laboratory and operations.
  • Associate degree in a laboratory science or medical technology program from an accredited institution.
  • At least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, including either—(1) 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or (2) 24 semester hours of science courses that include—(i) Six semester hours of chemistry; (ii) Six semester hours of biology; and (iii) Twelve semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
  • Experience as a medical laboratory technician/technologist.
  • Ability to prioritize.

  • Ability to work with and properly handle different types of people.
  • Regular requirement to use hands to feel; reach with hands or arms; talk; and hear.

  • Exceptional speaking and listening skills are essential.
  • Work involves a variety of changing activities; constant interruptions.
  • Must be able to work under stress: 20% of working time.

Responsibilities

  • Performing laboratory and phlebotomy procedures independently.

  • Performing duties of Department Lead Lab Tech, including monitoring quality control and instrument function, adding to test menu, new instrument start-up, inventory, instrument calibration, weekly departmental checklist, monitoring refrigerator/freezer temperatures, monitoring Technologist/Phlebotomist performance and reporting to Laboratory Director, employee competency, troubleshooting, reporting in lab meetings, and reporting unresolved departmental issues to Laboratory Director.
  • Performing phlebotomy successfully.
  • Possessing working knowledge of laboratory’s paper flow.
  • Following established procedure and observing safety precautions (e.g., wearing gloves and lab coat).
