About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for conducting or monitoring a wide range of clinical laboratory test procedures. The Medical Laboratory Technician utilizes a variety of equipment and materials to provide physicians with the data for the study diagnosis and treatment of patients and provides services in Microbiology, Serology, Urinalysis, Blood Bank, Hematology, and Chemistry. This position is part of the 1199SEIU Bargaining Unit at Cooley Dickinson Hospital. This position reports to the Chemistry Supervisor and operates within established organizational and departmental policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree Medical Laboratory Technology required
  • Medical Laboratory Technician [MLT(ASCP)] - American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC) required
  • Six (6) months to one (1) year experience as an MLT
  • Recent Blood Banking experience (within the previous 3 years) required if employee will be scheduled to work in the Blood Bank
  • Associate’s degree and MLT (CLT) (ASCP) or equivalent registration or registry eligibility required.
  • Relevant education transcripts required.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a working knowledge of established procedures within the department, such as, but not limited to, method principles and theory, instrument operation, reagent preparation, Quality Control acceptability, corrective action and reporting and documentation of patient results according to departmental protocol.
  • Maintain and operate instrumentation and equipment according to procedures and guidelines established by the supervisor in accordance with standards established by CAP and other regulatory agencies.
  • Conduct established quality control procedures on both tests and instrumentation.
  • Evaluate the results of such testing, implement corrective action and document such action.
  • Participate in quality assurance programs.
  • Prioritize workload to provide for optimal patient care and optimal efficiency.
  • Procure and prepare specimens for testing and evaluate suitability of specimens (accept or reject specimens).
  • Report, telephone and fax results as requested.
  • Maintain professional rapport with patients, physicians, nursing service and other staff members.
  • Utilize tact in interactions with these members of the health system.
  • Keep Supervisor/Team Leader informed of unusual patient data and/or results as well as “out of range” or unacceptable quality control and corrective actions taken.
  • Observe and maintain adequate laboratory supplies at all workstations, utilizing supplies in a cost effective manner.
  • Inform Supervisor/Team Leader of supplies found to be approaching outdate or established minimum inventory levels.
  • Participate in the development and research of new procedures, perform comparison studies assigned or required.
  • Assist in clinical orientation and supervision of students, new employees and/or less experienced staff members.
  • Maintain established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, confidentiality, quality improvement program, compliance, safety, infection control, and environmental standards.
  • Maintain professional growth and development through attendance at seminars, workshops, conferences or in-services, professional affiliations, or journals to stay abreast of current trends in field of expertise.
  • Meet annual competency and retraining requirements.
  • Attend meetings as required.
