Requirements

  • Current and Valid State License if the laboratory is located in a state where required.
  • ASCP certification, or equivalent, required.
  • Associates Degree in chemical, physical, biological science, or completion of coursework in a program for MLT.
  • Minimum 1 year of hospital laboratory work experience required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform waived, highly and moderately complex testing as stated in CLIA (42 CFR 493.1489).
  • Adhere to laboratory procedures for collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results.
  • Follow quality control policies and procedures, documenting corrective actions when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
  • Identify problems that may affect test performance and either correct them or notify the immediate supervisor, Director, or Medical Director.
  • Perform waived or highly and moderately complex laboratory procedures using manual and automated methods in Hematology, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, and Immunology.
  • Perform and document maintenance (daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed) on instruments and equipment.
  • Review the accuracy of patient results prior to releasing or reporting.
  • Recognize age-specific differences in expected results for newborns to geriatrics.
  • Ensure proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples and prohibit collaboration before reporting results.
  • May be required to perform venipuncture or capillary puncture on various age groups from newborn to geriatrics.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to all department and hospital policies and procedures related to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources.
  • May be assigned as Lead Tech in the absence of a supervisor, with responsibility for the section or department during their shift.
  • Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned by the department manager/director.
