About The Position

Under direct supervision of the Lab Management Team, performs quality control and assists in patients testing when needed; operates and maintains point of care lab equipment (CLIA waived and moderate complexity testing); conducts problem resolution, supply inventories and record keeping; renders excellent and effective communication to laboratory internal and external customers. The role involves overseeing the work activities and problem-solving of CPTs and MLTs at the Urgent Care laboratory, assisting in training and competency testing for Ambulatory Care personnel on point of care equipment, and potentially assisting with scheduling and managing technical competencies and skill improvement processes for the lab team, including new hires. The technician will monitor, operate, and troubleshoot waived and moderate complexity point of care instruments, perform required Quality Control testing, and determine the acceptability of QC results before patient testing. They will also demonstrate the ability to make technical decisions regarding testing and problem-solving, prepare and test new reagents, identify and replenish testing bench supplies, and may assist the Laboratory Manager in implementing new/improved workflows and processes, including validation and verification on new testing platforms. The role requires preparing for audits and accreditations, ensuring regulatory compliance, and assisting with specimen processing and patient testing when needed. The technician must be able to work independently and within a team, support the implementation and validation of new testing platforms, and possess knowledge of specimen preparation, storage, and disposal, as well as daily temperature recording according to laboratory SOPs. Record keeping for CLIA waived and moderate complexity testing, basic computer literacy for duties like record keeping and health record entries, and the ability to multitask, be flexible, ensure accuracy, and adapt to changes are essential. Personal characteristics of professionalism, commitment to high standards, and excellent communication skills are required, with the flexibility to work overtime or other shifts based on business needs.

Requirements

  • 5 years’ experience as Medical Laboratory Technician in a reference lab or urgent care setting
  • Associate degree or 60 semester or equivalent quarter units in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science
  • Current California State (CDPH) Medical Laboratory Technician License
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers
  • Excellent English speaking and writing skills
  • Very strong presentation skills required
  • Familiarity and experience working with various laboratory instruments such as ISTAT; Piccolo; Chemistry Analyzer; Coulter or any CBC instruments; Urinalysis instruments, such as Clinitek or Seimens Urine analyzer; and/or Coagu-Check instruments
  • Proficient in medical terminology
  • Basic computer skills and literacy

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the work activities and problem solving of the CPTs and MLTs at the Urgent Care laboratory
  • Assists in performing training/competency testing for Ambulatory Care personnel in the operation of waived and moderately complex point of care equipment
  • May assist in scheduling the CPTs and MLTs to match the demands of the daily workflow of the laboratory
  • May assist in managing to ensure technical competencies and skill improvement process of the lab team including training new hires
  • Monitor, operate and troubleshoot both waived and moderate complexity point of care instruments
  • Perform required Quality Control testing on all point of care testing instrument
  • Determines the acceptability of the quality control testing results prior to patient testing
  • Demonstrate the ability to make technical decisions regarding testing and problem solving
  • Prepare, test and evaluate new reagents and test devices
  • Identify and replenish testing bench supplies as necessary
  • May assist the Laboratory Manager or designee in implementing new/improved workflow and processes in continual approach including validation and verification on new testing platforms
  • Prepare for auditing and accreditations and ensures regulatory compliance of the laboratory
  • Assist with the processing of specimens and patient testing when needed
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Support in implementing and validating new testing platforms
  • Have knowledge and skills in specimen preparation, storage and disposal of specimen, revision of daily temperature and recording; according to laboratory SOPs
  • Perform records keeping of CLIA waived and moderate complexity testing according to laboratory SOPs
  • Demonstrate basic computer literacy to meet department needs and duties (i.e. records keeping, health record entries, results tracking, etc.)
  • Ability to multi task, flexible, ensures accuracy and completeness of work, adaptable to changes in department and business needs
  • Possess personal characteristics of professionalism, credible commitment to high standards with excellent communication skills; effectively and clearly communicate verbally and in writing with patients and other customers
  • Flexibility to work overtime or other shifts depending on the business needs
