About The Position

This position is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of patient laboratory test results. The Medical Laboratory Technician will perform procedures efficiently and as indicated in the procedure manual with minimal supervision and within the required turn-around-time without compromising quality. They will respond to STATs immediately and follow workflow processes according to documented procedures. Documentation and communications are reviewed in a timely manner and are appropriately referenced and applied. The role also involves ensuring the quality of test results by following defined Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) procedures, evaluating QC results prior to reporting patient results, and reviewing test results for accuracy. The technician will promptly report results in the LIS, demonstrate the ability to perform and accurately document all procedures related to critical values, technical limit failures, and QA activities, and recognize and troubleshoot test or reporting system problems. They will perform appropriate patient procedures in accordance with age-specific guidelines for the age groups served. Safety and compliance are paramount, including accurate patient identification, proper sample labeling, and adherence to policies and procedures to prevent the spread of disease. The role requires maintaining appropriate education to accomplish work objectives and current certifications, with a minimum of 4 hours of continuing education per year required. The technician will also ensure productive and efficient operations of the section and department, coordinating activities and communicating effectively with others to accomplish work objectives through positive and professional interactions. Demonstrates the ability to handle multiple tasks and adjust schedules to meet changes in workload or at the direction of the manager.

Requirements

  • MLT (ASCP) or equivalent certification required.
  • Associate degree preferred.
  • Previous experience as a Medical Lab Technician preferred.
  • Successful completion of a NAACLS approved Medical Technician program preferred.
  • Ability to listen and communicate effectively.
  • Technical ability and interest.

  • Demonstrates the ability to recognize a test or reporting system problem, troubleshoot and resolve if possible, seeking advice and escalating as needed.
  • Performs appropriate patient procedures in accordance with age-specific guidelines for the age groups served.
  • Ensures safety and compliance: Patients are accurately identified using two appropriate patient identifiers prior to sample collection.
  • Patient samples are accurately labeled and identified throughout the testing process from sample collection through testing and storage.
  • Misidentified samples are identified and responded to appropriately, notifying all appropriate staff.
  • Results are reported for the correct specimen.
  • Protects self, coworkers and facility by following approved policies and procedures to prevent the spread of bloodborne and/or airborne diseases.
  • Uses engineering controls, work practice controls and appropriate personal protective equipment as indicated in the section task list.
  • Maintains appropriate education to accomplish work objectives and maintain current certifications as applicable.
  • Demonstrates responsibility for professional growth by seeking out learning opportunities available within the department, organization, and community to increase knowledge and education.
  • Ensure productive and efficient operations of the section and department.
