About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care department of Dermatology is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician to provide support to a Mohs surgeon. This role involves accurately preparing and processing histologic specimens for microscopic evaluation and review. The technician will also maintain appropriate quality controls and ensure the department operates in accordance with standards set by OSHA, CLIA, and other regulatory agencies.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology program from an accredited institution, or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or a categorical/specialist certification in the appropriate laboratory discipline or eligible from American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency (NCA), or Successfully completed an official US military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician) is required.
  • Prior experience with laboratory and healthcare information systems is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • 1 or more years of experience in Mohs Histotechnology
  • Eligibility for certification by the ASCP as a Histology Technician
  • Certification from American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency (NCA) as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Histology Technician (HT) or Histology Technologist (HTL)

Responsibilities

  • Processes, embeds, cuts and stains quality frozen tissue specimens.
  • Performs and documents tests in compliance with quality control procedures and established parameters and standards.
  • Maintains appropriate quality controls, and ensures the department is operating in accordance with all standards set forth by OSHA, CLIA and other regulatory agencies.
  • Maintains histology equipment in good working order and troubleshoots equipment problems.
  • Works with the Mohs surgeon to resolve quality control, patient, or procedural problems.
  • Orders supplies related to the defined area.
  • Cross trains appropriate staff on job duties.
  • Consistently follows policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Maintains an extremely high level of confidentiality and follows HIPAA guidelines.
  • Responsible for delivering a high level of customer service in all interactions with patients, providers, employees, vendors, and guests.
  • Assists in meeting and exceeding individual, team and organizational goals.
  • Assists in slide procurement for external referrals.
  • Maintains yearly competencies.
