Medical Laboratory Technician: The Medical Laboratory Technician will conduct chemical analysis on lab samples from patients per provider’s requests while following protocols required by CLIA, CLSI, Joint Commission, OSHA, and other JVH, state, or Federal regulations. Medical Laboratory Technologist: Perform laboratory testing following written policies and procedures ensuring quality laboratory practices in compliance with regulations.

Requirements

  • Associate Degree of Applied Science in Medical Laboratory Technology or Associate of Arts Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology.
  • One year work experience required in a similar service-oriented industry.
  • Medical Laboratory Technician certification required, preferably ASCP.
  • Required Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Up to 3 years clinical laboratory experience as a certified MT or equivalent or certification eligible new MLS graduate.
  • Required current ASCP certification.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years related work experience preferred.
  • Additional education may be substituted for year’s experience.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct chemical analyses of body fluids, such as blood and urine, using microscope and automatic analyzers to detect abnormalities or diseases, and enter findings into computer.
  • Perform calibrations and quality control accurately and efficiently as required. Able to evaluate calibrations and quality control results to determine the accuracy of patient results.
  • Performs and reports on assigned analytical tests in a timely, efficient and accurate manner in compliance with documented laboratory procedures.
  • Recognizes factors that affect measurements and results. Notifies supervisor and takes appropriate action when needed according to predetermined protocols.
  • Performs quality control measures for all testing and ensures results meet established ranges before patient results are released.
  • Examine cells stained with dye to locate abnormalities.
  • Prepare, reconstitute, and/or dilute reagents, controls, or patient specimens correctly for analysis.
  • Meets deadlines for additional tasks and duties as assigned.
  • Effectively communicates with providers, supervisor or peers by providing information via telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person.
  • Sets up, adjusts, maintains and cleans medical laboratory equipment as required.
  • Uses computers and computer systems (including hardware and software) to document and record data accurately and precisely.
  • Obtain specimens, cultivating, isolating and identifying microorganisms for analysis.
  • Prepares and sends information to the Health Department any diseases that must be reported.
  • Follow CLIA and OSHA regulations at all times.
  • Maintains a strict level of patient confidentiality.
  • Maintains neat and professional appearance.

  • Performs phlebotomy skillfully utilizing proper laboratory procedures as outlined by CLSI within minimal discomfort to the patient.
  • Obtains and collects high quality specimens that are appropriate for the ordered laboratory tests.
  • Disinfects laboratory surfaces with daily cleaning.
  • Verifies and records identity of patient using 2 patient identifiers.
  • Correctly labels, processes and properly stores blood and body fluid specimens according to the specimen requirements.
  • Collect blood or tissue samples from patients, observing principles of asepsis to obtain blood sample.
  • Effectively interacts with patient to minimize the apprehension of the phlebotomy procedure.
  • Communicates the need for additional supplies in order to maintain adequate inventory.
  • Labels and stores blood/body fluids appropriately for subsequent processing.
  • Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
  • Reports test results in a timely manner and according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
  • Follows established procedures for laboratory quality control and reports discrepancies to the laboratory manager.
  • Performs daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed, maintenance on instruments and equipment as appropriate.
  • Performs calibration of equipment as required.
  • Troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimen's when problems occur. Notifies the laboratory manager if unable to solve the problem.
  • Complies with established laboratory and clinic policies for universal precautions and safety procedures. When handling blood and/or body fluids, universal precaution procedures will be followed in order to minimize exposure to infectious diseases. Safety policies and procedures will be followed when using chemicals.
  • Performs phlebotomy (venipunctures, fingersticks) as appropriate for the patient requiring this procedure.
  • When requested, performs duties required for relief in higher classification in supervisor’s absence.
  • Performs and reports on assigned analytical tests, including those of moderate complexity on biological specimens in a timely, efficient and accurate manner in compliance with documented laboratory procedures.
  • Recognizes factors that affect measurements and results and takes appropriate action according to predetermined protocols.
  • Responsible for performance of quality control measures for all testing and meets established ranges before patient results are released.
  • Assist with follow-up on rejected interface messages and merging of duplicate charts.
  • Assist with printing monthly reports and entering data into various QA programs, TAT’s and productivity reports.
  • Knows the formal and informal department goals, standards, policies, and procedures which may include some familiarity of other departments within Jordan Valley Community Health Center.
  • Attends various meetings regarding safety and quality control issues to keep informed of current lab and health center safety policies.
  • Assist with ordering/maintaining supplies, lab schedule, and completing MLT and/or Phlebotomy competencies.
