About The Position

Indiana University Health is hiring qualified Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLTs) or Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLSs) for generalist roles at Fort Wayne Hospital. Candidates are considered based on education, certification, experience, and qualifications. The positions are full-time and include day, evening, and night schedules. Employees work every other weekend and rotate holidays. Training takes place on day and evening shifts and may require travel to IU Ball and Jay locations. IU Health laboratories provide comprehensive laboratory services, operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and perform more than 19 million tests annually. The role involves laboratory testing of patient specimens to provide information used in diagnosing, treating, or preventing disease. The MLS role generates test results independently within quality-control standards, maintains performance records, may participate in research and development, may serve as a resource for staff, and instructs students and staff. The MLT role assists with testing and, under direction, may provide information supporting diagnosis and treatment. MLTs help maintain performance records and assist with procedure development and modification. Both roles follow standard operating procedures and may take on additional responsibilities assigned by management or the laboratory director. MLS candidates need a bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or a related science, one year of relevant experience, and certification or eligibility for board certification through ASCP, AMT, NCA, or an equivalent organization. Certification must be obtained within 12 months of employment. MLT candidates need a bachelor’s degree in a related science, an associate degree in an approved Medical Laboratory Technician program, or qualifying military laboratory training/certification. Associate-degree candidates must obtain an accepted certification within 12 months of employment. Failure to meet the applicable certification requirement may result in reassignment/downgrade or loss of employment, depending on business need.
