About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Scientist performs waived and moderately complex laboratory testing, including collection, processing, analysis, and accurate result reporting in accordance with established procedures and regulatory standards. This role ensures quality control compliance, performs proficiency testing, monitors test system performance, and takes appropriate corrective action when needed. The position requires strong technical, organizational, and communication skills, along with the ability to manage workflow and perform safe, efficient laboratory operations in a primary care setting.

Requirements

  • Medical Laboratory Scientist preferred (4 year degree and ASCP certification)
  • Phlebotomy proficiency
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures
  • Electronic health records experience
  • Good communication skills, problem solving, independent judgement, and initiative
  • Ability to prioritize and develop workflow
  • Fine motor skills necessary to operate the computer and laboratory equipment
  • Ability to stand most of the day, stretch repeatedly over the counter, and lift loads of less than 10 pounds

Responsibilities

  • Perform waived and moderately complex testing
  • Follow laboratory procedures for specimen collection, handling, processing, analysis, and reporting; ensure accurate and timely documentation of all patient test results
  • Perform instrument maintenance procedures according to established manufacturer guidelines, and ensure patient results are not reported until all corrective action has been taken and the test system is functioning properly
  • Perform and document proficiency testing in compliance with CLIA requirements, ensuring samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens
  • Adhere to quality control policies, including documenting all quality control activities
  • Performance and documentation of assigned quality assurance procedures
  • Monitor test system performance, identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or test results
  • Perform troubleshooting procedures and appropriately notify, communicate, and document corrective actions when test systems deviate from established performance specifications
  • Ensure compliance with CLIA, OSHA, HIPAA, and established Family Practice Associates of Lexington Policies and Procedures.
  • Order the most cost-effective material while meeting the quality and supply needs of the laboratory
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the laboratory manager
