About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Technologist (MT), evaluates specimens for acceptability for proper testing; and performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures. He/She verifies accuracy of results before reporting; reports test results in a timely manner and according to established laboratory protocol and procedures. The MLS/MT performs needed maintenance and calibration on instruments and equipment as appropriate; troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens when problems occur. He/She complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions, safety procedures, and exposure control/plans for blood borne and airborne pathogens. The MLS/MT performs phlebotomy (venipunctures, finger sticks, and bleeding times) as appropriate for the patient requiring this procedure. The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Technologist (MT) must have an in-depth knowledge of laboratory techniques, principles, and instruments. He/She must demonstrate a willingness to work with the realization that error may have serious consequences for patients. The MLS/MT must demonstrate attention to detail for extended periods of time. He/She must demonstrate skill in operating laboratory equipment. The MLS/MT must demonstrate skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other employees and departments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology or related scientific discipline required by CLIA
  • Registered as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) at (or within 1 year) of job start.
  • In-depth knowledge of laboratory techniques, principles, and instruments.
  • Willingness to work with the realization that error may have serious consequences for patients.
  • Attention to detail for extended periods of time.
  • Skill in operating laboratory equipment.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other employees and departments.
  • Proficient knowledge and ability to use a computer (must be keyboard proficient) and other office technology (i.e., telephone, fax, etc.), MS Outlook and Word.
  • Ability to demonstrate appropriate clinical judgment and apply appropriate professional skills to a patient population of all ages.
