About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) position at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center is a full-time role responsible for performing a wide range of clinical laboratory tests to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. This includes phlebotomy, testing in hematology, urinalysis, general microscopy, transfusion medicine, serology, bacteriology, coagulation, chemistry, and blood gases. The role requires adherence to all policies, procedures, and regulations, including performing quality control, troubleshooting instruments, and maintaining a clean work area. The position also emphasizes patient interaction using AIDET and compliance with HIPAA regulations regarding patient health information.

Requirements

  • Experience with troubleshooting and repairing instruments
  • Experience with clinical laboratory testing
  • Experience reporting laboratory results
  • Experience with phlebotomy
  • Experience with performing quality control and calibrations ensuring accuracy of result reporting
  • Reviewing quality control data
  • Preceptor training
  • Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent in Biological Science, Chemical Science, Medical Laboratory Science or related field
  • At least 1 year of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or related occupation
  • ASCP, AAB, or AMT certified

Responsibilities

  • Performs phlebotomy and clinical laboratory testing in hematology, urinalysis, general microscopy, transfusion medicine, serology, bacteriology, coagulation, chemistry, and blood gases.
  • Obtains data for use in diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
  • Adheres to all policies, procedures, and regulations when collecting samples for testing.
  • Performs tests, procedures, and analyses as requested by the physician and in accordance with all regulatory regulations.
  • Performs quality control for all procedures at the required intervals.
  • Verifies and documents QC results as reading within acceptable limits.
  • Applies and documents corrective action and troubleshooting when necessary.
  • Immediately communicates to the physician or RN any critical values or markedly unusual test results.
  • Maintains the equipment and work area in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Identifies, troubleshoots, and documents required repair of instruments.
  • Ensures the use of AIDET with each patient interaction.
  • Complies with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability regulation pertaining to all patient health information (PHI).
