About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) is responsible for accurately performing routine and special laboratory tests according to procedure manuals and recording their results. This role involves evaluating test results, including normal and abnormal findings that require notification, documentation, and/or verification. The MLS also evaluates results for clinical significance, validity, and appropriateness, and follows prescribed policy for reporting and notification. Additionally, the position entails performing and documenting calibration, maintenance, and repair of instruments and equipment, recognizing indicators of test and/or instrument malfunction, and implementing appropriate corrections. Quality control and assurance for improvement are also key responsibilities, including performing, documenting, and reviewing these processes according to established protocols, and taking corrective action when indicated. The MLS will also perform and document internal and external proficiency testing in the same manner as patient samples and perform specialty testing in areas including chemistry, hematology, and coagulation. Supporting disease-specific accreditations of an institution by meeting turn-around time goals is also part of the role.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree/ Associate degree in a clinical laboratory science or medical technology program from an accredited institution.
• Current MLS/MT (ASCP) registration or equivalent.
• Minimum of one year of laboratory experience in high/moderate complexity testing.

• Capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of results, and she/he takes corrective action or notifies appropriate supervisory personnel.

Responsibilities

• Evaluates quality control results and takes corrective action when indicated.
• Performs internal and external proficiency testing in the same manner as patient samples.
• Performs specialty testing in areas including chemistry, hematology, coagulation.
• Supports the disease specific accreditations of an institution by meeting turn-around time goals.
