Medical Laboratory Scientist
About The Position
The Medical Laboratory Scientist works in Baptist Health’s Clinical Lab and Pathology Department, which emphasizes accurate, reliable testing and patient-centered care. The role maintains technical competency, uses laboratory information system functions, and performs downtime procedures. The scientist evaluates procedures and selects appropriate investigative techniques, identifies and resolves issues that could affect test results, assesses specimen acceptability, documents unacceptable specimens, and communicates specimen requirements. The position also involves identifying and addressing issues with specimens, test orders, and registration; professional troubleshooting and communication about delays; and applying complex problem-solving skills to clinical and instrument problems.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Certified or eligible for certification in clinical laboratory science by a recognized certifying agency.
- Certification must be achieved within one year of hire.
Responsibilities
- Maintain technical competency related to job functions.
- Understand pertinent laboratory information system functions and perform downtime procedures effectively.
- Evaluate procedures and select appropriate investigative techniques as indicated.
- Identify and resolve problems that may adversely affect test results and notify appropriate personnel.
- Determine specimen acceptability through visual inspection or recognition of abnormal or unusual results.
- Document unacceptable specimens according to policy and communicate specimen requirements to appropriate personnel.
- Assess job functions and take appropriate action when problems are detected.
- Identify problems with specimens, test orders, and registration and take appropriate action.
- Troubleshoot professionally and communicate with coworkers and customers when delays occur.
- Use complex problem-solving skills to resolve clinical and instrument problems.
