Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science, MLS or CLS.
  • Certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology within six months of employment.
  • A comprehensive knowledge of human physiology, technical phlebotomy, and general laboratory skills.
  • Good communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Facilitation skills to manage, support, and work cooperatively with patients, physicians, and staff.
  • Regular and predictable attendance.
  • Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel, and type on a keyboard.
  • Must be able to talk and hear.
  • Occasionally required to sit, stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Continuously performs complex manipulative skills.
  • Must be able to move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities include close, distance, and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Uses Video Display Terminal 85% of the time.

Responsibilities

  • Perform essential tasks of collecting, preparing, and analyzing patient tests.
  • Make critical judgments by evaluating patient test results for accuracy and consistency relevant to the patient’s condition.
  • Accept, document, and report results to the appropriate personnel.
  • Maintain clinical laboratory equipment and performance by performing daily maintenance procedures.
  • Evaluate instrument performance through calibration, quality control, and precision testing.
  • Maintain quality of test results by performing and reviewing required quality control by consulting with the Laboratory Manager, Laboratory Director, and Staff Physicians.
  • Ensure correct billing and coding by reviewing incoming electronic orders and correctly filling out test requisitions with required patient information, date of service, and diagnosis.
  • Review patient worklist for pending and incomplete orders.
  • Protect patients and FCMC by adhering to the FCMC infection control plan and hazardous waste policies, including wearing PPE.
  • Follow patient and specimen identification procedures and maintain patient confidentiality through HIPAA compliance.
  • Display professional conduct when dealing with patients, the public, FCMC staff, and physicians.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge through FCMC in-services, computer training, professional workshops and publications, and maintaining required certification.
  • Maintain 24-hour coverage by working a 40-hour scheduled work week, being available within 15 minutes when on call for emergencies, and overseeing laboratory operations in the absence of the Laboratory Manager.
  • Submit to COVID-19 testing as required by CMS other regulatory agencies and per FCMC policy and procedure.
