About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Scientist conducts analysis of body fluids, including blood, urine, and spinal fluid, to determine presence of normal or abnormal components. Areas of accountability will include, but are not limited to, the following disciplines: transfusion services, chemistry, coagulation, hematology, microbiology, immunology, molecular diagnostics, toxicology and urinalysis.

Requirements

  • Must have earned a doctoral, master’s, or bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical or biological science, or a bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution.
  • Education must be verified by a credentialing agency if the bachelor’s degree was obtained outside of the United States.
  • ASCP, or equivalent for an MLS, is required. New graduates have 6 months after employment to pass the test.
  • Demonstrates the skill and knowledge of a Medical Laboratory Scientist.
  • Complies with all department and organization policies.
  • Ability to manage time, tasks, and resources appropriately.
  • Effective Communication.
  • Exemplify customer service when communicating with patients, providers, and peers (within the lab and hospital wide).
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Demonstrates punctuality and dependability and contributes to a positive work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates the ability to plan and prioritize tasks within time expectations; including but not limited to, monitoring supplies, organizing workload and prioritizing multiple activities.
  • Detects testing anomalies and correlates quantitative, biochemical, physiologic and morphologic data to verify the validity of test results.
  • Exercises independent judgment and critical thinking to formulate plan(s) of action for situations not addressed in standard operating procedures.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work independently and seeks to problem solve using critical thinking and available resources.
  • Seeks out organization information by participating in the daily huddle, reading emails and attending or watching the monthly All Staff Meetings.
  • Participate in the Laboratory Quality Assurance Plan; including but not limited to, method evaluation, teaching/training, point-of-care testing and new procedure implementation, inspection readiness, QA evaluations and improvements.
  • Adheres to QC policies and procedures, identifying areas in need of improvement.
  • Participate in high reliability practices to insure a safe work environment.
  • Pass a colorblind test or prove alternative methods to seeing color is as effective.
  • Documents all testing performance measures (maintenance, temps, QC, trouble-shooting logs, etc.) and ensures test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functioning properly.
