About The Position

Northwestern Medicine is seeking a part-time Medical Laboratory Scientist for the 3rd shift at Delnor Hospital in Geneva. This position requires 20 hours per week, with shifts from 10pm to 6:30am, including every other weekend. The Medical Laboratory Scientist will perform test procedures in a clinical laboratory, ensuring accurate and timely results for patient diagnosis and treatment, while upholding the organization's mission, vision, and values.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, Biology, or Allied Health qualifying the applicant to take the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), or equivalent certification examination.
  • General MLS or MT (ASCP) Certification or eligible or Categorical BB, C, H or M (ASCP) Certification or eligible
  • If hired after 1/19/2025 must be ASCP certified (or equivalent certification) within one year of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs all aspects of pre-analytic workflow, including order entry verification, specimen processing, and troubleshooting unclear orders with physicians and nurses.
  • Verifies specimen labeling, evaluates appropriateness, and documents unacceptable specimens.
  • Prioritizes specimen processing and aliquots specimens according to protocols.
  • Performs all aspects of analytical testing following established protocols and SOPs.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on instruments/equipment and verifies reagents and supplies.
  • Ensures sufficient reagents and supplies are available and notifies senior staff of low inventory.
  • Performs and records quality control (QC), evaluates QC results, and takes corrective actions.
  • Performs pre-test specimen preparation as needed.
  • Transfers or ships specimens to approved testing locations.
  • Prioritizes testing to meet defined turn-around-times (TAT) and adjusts workflow for STAT tests or volume fluctuations.
  • Monitors daily workflow to assure meeting service levels.
  • Reviews results for completeness, correctness, and consistency, and provides accurate interpretations.
  • Evaluates test results/reactions and integrates with other patient data.
  • Performs visual interpretation/identifications as appropriate.
  • Recognizes unusual test results and completes indicated reflex testing or follow-up actions.
  • Follows notification protocols for critical values, result requests, and abnormalities.
  • Recognizes test system performance problems and takes corrective actions.
  • Escalates unresolved problems and follows up on pending tests.
  • Stores specimens and related materials according to protocols.
  • Retrieves specimens and related materials when needed.
  • Verifies and reports results, performs computer functions for releasing results, and generates written reports.
  • Reviews electronic or printed reports, recognizes problems, and escalates.
  • Corrects erroneous reports and amends reports according to procedure.
  • Responds to requests for information according to established protocol for confidentiality.
  • Escalates unresolved inquiries.
  • Stores documents and records according to established protocol.
  • Performs billing and/or enters credits for tests and services, and escalates billing problems.
  • Follows written standard operating procedures (SOP) and operates instruments/equipment according to protocol.
  • Uses computers according to established protocol and follows downtime procedures.
  • Meets proficiency and competency standards of the department.
  • Participates in the training of new employees and students.
  • Performs operational review of new SOPs and participates in new test development, validations, and implementation.
  • Attends at least one personal development session per year.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to ensure continued quality operations.
  • Follows all required safety procedures and uses appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Maintains a clean and organized work area.
  • Answers telephone using NM telephone etiquette.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality, including protected health information (PHI).
  • Assists patients, visitors, and other contacts as needed.
