About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Lead, Chief, Supervisor, and/or Manager, this role involves processing laboratory specimens, performing data entry, transporting specimens, preparing reagents, preparing specimen batches for instrumentation, maintaining equipment, and managing laboratory supplies. The ideal candidate will be a self-sufficient, independent worker, a skilled problem-solver, and a champion of CHOP ICARE and Service Standards. This position requires working every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday) on the Dayshift, from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma / GED - Required
  • Bachelor's Degree current enrollment in a bachelor's degree of Medical Laboratory Science or related science program - Required
  • Training and competence in advanced Phlebotomy and/or Central Lab procedures
  • Able to work within in a project team environment
  • Knowledge: basic biology, basic chemistry, English language, customer service, public safety and security
  • Technology skills: electronic mail, Microsoft Office applications, typing, internet software, Microsoft Windows
  • Other skills: active listening, reading comprehension, critical thinking, speaking, complex problem solving, monitoring, time management, writing, active learning, coordination, judgement and decision making, service orientation, social perceptiveness.

Responsibilities

  • Assess specimen acceptability and integrity to meet laboratory requirements for testing.
  • Triage, accession, process, and route specimens following established procedures.
  • Store specimens according to laboratory-specific storage directives.
  • Retrieve stored specimens for additional processing as needed.
  • Provide face-to-face customer service guided by CHOP ICARE and Service Standards.
  • Interface with laboratory staff, medical staff, medical courier, and vendors.
  • Provide a collaborative experience, diffusing anger or frustration and seeking solutions.
  • Answer questions and direct to appropriate answers, resources, or subject matter experts.
  • Utilize proper phone etiquette, ensuring a warm tone of voice and diffusing anger or frustration.
  • Call critical lab values to clinicians.
  • Treat each specimen as a patient and exhaust all options when problem-solving to avoid re-collection.
  • Work collaboratively and effectively with co-workers and staff to resolve conflicts and meet departmental and institutional goals.
  • Maintain and clean medical laboratory equipment, engaging senior laboratory team members or technical support for troubleshooting.
  • Assist in monitoring inventory control and perform cycle counting.
  • Unpack and restock supplies.
  • Perform limited messenger service as required, promptly delivering specimens or paperwork throughout the health care campus.
  • Promptly activate and execute pneumatic tube downtime procedures.
  • Be knowledgeable in the use of resources to identify transport temperatures for all specimens and ensure stability.
  • Regularly review operational procedure manuals.
  • Maintain individual annual technical competency assessments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
