The Medical Laboratory Technician I (MLT) is responsible for performing routine tests on blood, tissues, and other body specimens, providing physicians with quality results using a variety of clinical laboratory equipment. The MLT must have a total understanding of patient safety and laboratory techniques necessary to guarantee complete patient safety and anonymity. Alternatively, the role involves performing routine and special diagnostic procedures requiring technical skill, judgment, and independent decision-making following established standards, policies, and procedures. This may include phlebotomy and accessioning duties, and assisting the Laboratory Supervisor in technical and administrative functions. The position requires operating laboratory instrumentation, performing patient phlebotomy, and making sound decisions under stressful conditions and time constraints. It also demands superior work knowledge, clear organization and communication skills, and the ability to use office equipment. Strict confidentiality of work-related information is essential. The role requires the ability to work well with patients, the public, and all other healthcare professionals. The work environment involves frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, stooping, and potentially lifting up to 50 lbs. It requires finger/hand dexterity, eye/hand coordination, and reaching. Corrected hearing and vision to normal range, visual acuity, and normal color perception are necessary. Exposure to blood, body fluids, tissue, communicable diseases, infectious materials, toxic substances, biohazardous materials, and other common laboratory conditions is possible. The environment is a normal laboratory setting, fast-paced, high traffic, potentially interruptive and stressful. The role may require taking call and/or working weekends/holidays based on department needs.
