About The Position

This role is responsible for accurately performing specimen analysis, instrument maintenance, and quality control procedures, including moderate and high complexity laboratory tests. The position involves initiating and following quality assurance and safety policies, performing specimen collection, and assisting with patient flow as needed. A key aspect of this role is training employees in laboratory procedures and potentially acting as the primary operator for all laboratory instruments. The Lead Medical Laboratory Scientist serves as a resource for laboratory science information and acts as a working technical lead for the day-to-day operations of the main laboratory, overseeing the daily activities of technical and phlebotomy staff. Responsibilities include creating work schedules, monitoring for absences, and assisting with coverage. The role also supports the Lab Manager in areas such as budgeting, cost analysis, marketing, managed care contracts, and the Billing Interface. Additionally, the Lead will delegate duties as needed when the manager is off-site, ensuring reports are completed by 10 AM, and assist with monthly Quality Control records, ensuring data submission before deadlines. Collating data and storing it in logs is required to meet COLA/CLIA requirements. The position requires support and adherence to the US Oncology Compliance Program, including the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.

Requirements

  • Associates Degree in Medical Technology or related science field.
  • Minimum five years experience in laboratory testing.
  • Experience using a wide array of Laboratory Instrumentation and Maintenance.
  • Knowledge of COLA and CLIA regulations required.
  • Must possess leadership qualities.

  • One year of supervisory or lead experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs specimen analysis for all testing done in house for moderate and high complexity laboratory tests.
  • Acts as working technical lead of day to day operations for the main laboratory.
  • Assists lab manager with supervision of activities of Laboratory personnel, including Medical Technologists, MLT’s and Phlebotomists.
  • Assists Lab Manager with Billing report as needed, delegating duties, insuring the report is complete by 10AM daily.
  • Completes end of month QC reporting, maintenance of lab records, insures all data is reported to pertinent IQAP programs.
  • Creates work schedule and monitors for absences and coverage as necessary.
  • Trains employees in laboratory procedures.
  • May act as primary operator for all laboratory instruments.
  • Acts as a resource for laboratory science information.
