This position performs test procedures of moderate/high complexity requiring the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility in those specialties in which they are qualified by education, training, and experience. The Medical Laboratory Scientist II provides support to the department in areas such as quality control, troubleshooting complex problems, customer support, instrument and equipment maintenance, staff training, process improvement, and the completion of special projects. They perform and report on assigned analytical tests in accordance with applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), ensuring quality control requirements are met. This role actively supports and complies with laboratory policies and procedures for specimen handling, test analysis, reporting, and record maintenance. The position requires adherence to analytical schedules to maintain turnaround times, including STATs or critical results. Responsibilities include ensuring reagents and test kits are properly dated, performing and documenting QC analysis, making quality control decisions, and reporting any deviations from standard procedures. Test results are entered into the Laboratory Information System, and laboratory areas and equipment are maintained in a safe, functional, and sanitary condition. Training and competency checklists are completed, and the individual may assist supervisors with training other personnel. Adherence to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory safety requirements is mandatory, including the use of personal protective equipment, engineering controls, and work practice controls. The role may involve answering client inquiries, participating in regulatory inspections, and assuming lead responsibilities in the absence of a supervisor.
