About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Scientist II has the educational background to perform standard laboratory procedures requiring a broad use of independent judgment and responsibility with minimum technical supervision. The technologist maintains equipment and records and performs QC and QA related to test performances. The technologist performs a broad range of laboratory procedures in hematology. The technologist understands the roles and relationships among health care practitioners. The Medical Laboratory Scientist II performs at a level of quality and productivity commensurate for a technologist with this level of experience and may be assigned special projects and/or administrative related duties. The MLSII, having the additional designation of Lead Technologist, is assigned specific administrative related duties and is likely assigned additional special tasks and/or projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Sciences OR an approved ASCP discipline (30 semester hours in biology and chemistry, which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the Bachelor's) PLUS 2 yrs of experience in a clinical lab setting.
  • ASCP or another accrediting agency-certified (Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Technologist (MT), or discipline-specific certification (C, H)) or eligible (Certification must be obtained within one year of employment).
  • Proof of legal authority to work in the United States on the first day of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze blood, urine, spinal fluid, body fluids, and other biological samples to determine the presence of normal and abnormal components in assigned section(s).
  • Perform quality controls or quality check materials and perform corrective action as required.
  • Act as a resource for problem-solving issues related to quality control assessment and materials used.
  • Enter test results and other data related to analysis and communication of results into relevant computer information systems or other document archival systems.
  • Provide technical information about specimen collection, sample transport, sample identification, required documents, test methods, and other related technical information to RN, physicians, or laboratory clients.
  • Use laboratory computer systems to order tests, generate results, generate reports, document results and communications, interpret results, and other lab duties related to inventory, testing method verifications and quality control.
  • Use multiple information systems including Microsoft Office software programs, instrument-specific programs, automation line software and middleware, programs for test interpretation, server databases, laboratory information system, quality control programs, inventory control software, document control and online programs related to employee continuing education and training.
  • Assist IT staff with troubleshooting IT issues and change verification studies.
  • Set up, maintain, and operate lab automation systems used to process samples.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain equipment used in analysis such as spectrophotometers, analyzers, microscopes, slide stainers, diluters, and computer-controlled high-volume analyzers, mixers, rotators, and pipettes.
  • Perform minor troubleshooting on equipment used to perform testing or store supplies.
  • Maintain equipment used for personal protection and safety such as eyewashes, safety showers, biohazard containers, hoods, chemical cabinets, and personal protective equipment.
  • Maintain temperature-dependent equipment such as refrigerators, freezers, incubators, water baths, and heat blocks.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
