About The Position

As a bench technologist in Microbiology, this person is responsible for processing, evaluating patient specimens, performing tests to identify microorganisms or antigens according to written procedures and perform susceptibilities. This person will also record and evaluate daily, weekly, and monthly QC in their assigned areas for further review by the supervisor. This position requires one to maintain safe work practices, follow all regulatory requirements and engage supervisor, manager, or director as appropriate.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in medical laboratory sciences, Medical Technology or an ASCP approved discipline (chemistry or biology)
  • CHT (ABHI) certification within 1 year of eligibility. If eligible at time of hire, certification must be obtained within 1 year of hire date.
  • Proof of legal authority to work in the United States on the first day of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Processing patient specimens such as blood, urine, sputum, stool, wound cultures, and body fluids
  • Performing microbial cultures to grow and isolate organisms
  • Identifying microorganisms using biochemical tests, microscopy, automated analyzers, and molecular methods
  • Conducting Gram stains and other differential staining procedures
  • Performing antimicrobial susceptibility testing to determine effective antibiotics
  • Operating and maintaining laboratory instruments and analyzers
  • Reviewing and verifying test results for accuracy before reporting
  • Following strict quality control and quality assurance procedures
  • Maintaining compliance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), College of American Pathologists (CAP), and safety standards
  • Using aseptic technique and biosafety precautions when handling infectious materials
  • Communicating critical test results to physicians, nurses, and infection prevention teams
  • Assisting with outbreak investigations and infection control monitoring
  • Training students, new employees, or laboratory assistants
  • Documenting laboratory findings in electronic medical record and laboratory information systems
  • Perform other duties as needed.
