About The Position

A Medical Laboratory Scientist I – Hematology performs routine and complex laboratory testing on blood and body fluid specimens to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. This entry-level professional operates and maintains laboratory instrumentation, ensures accurate and timely test results, follows quality control and regulatory standards, and collaborates with physicians and other healthcare professionals to support exceptional patient care.

Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree from regionally accredited university in medical technology, medical laboratory science, chemistry, or biology.
  • Eligible for ASCP or equivalent certification.
  • Must obtain certification within 12 months of eligibility.
  • Proof of legal authority to work in the United States on the first day of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct analysis of blood, urine, spinal fluid, body fluids and other biological samples to determine presence of normal and abnormal components in assigned section(s).
  • Perform quality controls or quality check materials and perform corrective action as required.
  • Enter test results and other data related to analysis and communication of results into relevant computer information systems or other document archival systems.
  • Provide technical information about specimen collection, sample transport, sample identification, required documents, test methods and other related technical information to RN’s, physicians or laboratory clients.
  • Use laboratory computer systems to order tests, generate results, generate reports, document results and communications, interpret results, and other lab duties related to inventory, testing method verifications and quality control.
  • Perform daily set-up and maintenance on lab analyzers and automation line used to process samples.
  • Operate equipment used in analysis such as spectrophotometers, analyzers, microscopes, slide stainers, diluters, and computer controlled high volume analyzers, mixers, rotators, pipettes.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting on equipment used to perform testing.
  • Document function checks of temperature dependent equipment such as refrigerators, freezers, incubators, water baths, heat blocks.
  • Daily quality control review for assigned instruments.
  • Organize and clean workspaces.
  • Ensure adequate supplies required for daily operations are available by restocking inventory, preparing reagents, rotating stock as required.
  • Communicate with clinics, physicians and external staff regarding sample integrity issues and/or critical values.
  • Maintain current knowledge of hospital policy, state, federal and other regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain certifications, continuing education, annual education and/or training as required for position.
  • Perform proficiency testing required for accreditation
