Responsibilities

  • Determines suitability of specimens and orders by verifying patient information and troubleshooting erroneous or inconsistent orders
  • Organizes and prioritizes workload to meet the needs of medical staff without repetition of work
  • Performs routine and special testing procedures accurately, evaluates results, and troubleshoots abnormal findings in a timely manner
  • Responds quickly to emergency situations and STAT requests, providing services without delay
  • Assists other staff with specimen troubleshooting and workload to meet turnaround times
  • Communicates quality control issues to the appropriate supervisor and maintains accurate documentation
  • Orders supplies to maintain inventory levels and quarantines or discards unsuitable stock
  • Performs and documents quality control procedures and routine maintenance on instruments
  • Records and monitors temperatures and functions of refrigerators and freezers per protocol
  • Assists with troubleshooting instrument issues and evaluating new procedures and instruments
  • Maintains and demonstrates competency in procedures through ongoing performance and continuing education
  • Trains new employees and communicates clearly to support workflow and quality testing
  • Serves as in-charge technologist in the supervisor's absence, prioritizing workflow and documenting issues
  • Adheres to safety policies and maintains a clean work area
