About The Position

This position involves performing clinical laboratory testing in accordance with established procedures and physician orders. The role requires drawing blood, receiving and processing specimens, preparing reagents and equipment, and ensuring proper calibration and maintenance of instruments. The technician will also be responsible for accurate data transcription, communicating critical values to providers, participating in quality assurance and proficiency testing programs, and managing laboratory supplies. Additionally, the role involves assisting with training new personnel and students, maintaining a clean and organized work environment, and staying knowledgeable about departmental policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Must read, write, and communicate in English.
  • Ability to communicate in English to understand and respond to basic verbal and written English language instruction.
  • An Associates’ Degree in science and/or completion of an approved Medical Laboratory Technology internship program and/or registration as a Medical Laboratory Technician with the ASCP or NCA, preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent and two years’ experience within clinical laboratory, preferably at Medical Affiliates of Cape Cod following training on all instruments and the Laboratory Information System.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work successfully in a team effort.
  • Must possess good oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be well organized, dependable, self-motivating, and demonstrate initiative.

Responsibilities

  • Performs clinical testing in conformance with laboratory procedures and physician orders.
  • Initiates follow-up as necessary to confirm an order.
  • Draws venous or capillary blood from patients as required.
  • Receives other body fluids or specimens from inpatients and outpatients.
  • Packages specimens together with pertinent information and arranges for delivery to reference laboratory.
  • Prioritizes requests according to need and conditions.
  • Prepares reagents, standards, and controls when needed.
  • Prepares and sets up equipment for various tests and assures proper calibration.
  • Performs instrument troubleshooting and preventive maintenance as scheduled.
  • Performs and records daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance checks on all laboratory equipment.
  • Accurately transcribes completed test data for reporting.
  • Communicates with Providers and their Teams alerting them to critical values in a timely manner.
  • Makes recommendations for improvements in quality and/or efficiency to the immediate supervisor.
  • Participates in the Proficiency Testing program to maintain CLIA compliance.
  • Participates in Quality Assurance projects, including data collection and summarization of findings.
  • Assists the supervisor in the maintenance of assigned procedure manuals in compliance with CLIA and Massachusetts Department of Health standards.
  • Practices efficient and economical use of laboratory supplies; checks inventory, orders supplies, and restocks upon arrival.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information deemed confidential.
  • Assists in work performed by MLT, orientation of all new personnel, training of students, and instruction to non-technical personnel.
  • Maintains work benches, testing areas, and other work areas in a clean, sanitary, and clutter-free condition.
  • Ensures adequate availability of required supplies and reagents and communicates to appropriate supervisory personnel when necessary.
  • Learns and performs new procedures established in the clinical laboratory.
  • Retains a thorough knowledge of departmental policies and procedures, including fire and disaster plans.
  • Performs other work-related duties and activities as assigned or requested.
