About The Position

Performs moderately complex general laboratory testing in the area(s) of licensure under the direction of a Medical Technologist. The Medical Lab Technician will perform and report routine laboratory testing following established policies and procedures to ensure the highest quality of laboratory results within established timeframes. They will verify results and quality control data for accuracy and reliability, and perform, evaluate, and document all quality control, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures. Proficiency in computer systems including ordering, resulting, and inquiry functions is required. The role also involves ensuring proper utilization and preparation of reagents and supplies, communicating critical results to the patient caregiver, and regularly reporting all unusual findings and work activities to the immediate supervisor and oncoming technologist. The position requires reasonably regular, punctual attendance and compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an approved school of medical laboratory technician.
  • Associate degree in related field.
  • Current Florida license as a Clinical Laboratory Technician by Florida Department of Health.
  • Certified in area(s) of laboratory where assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Performs and reports routine laboratory testing following established policies and procedures to ensure the highest quality of laboratory results within established timeframes.
  • Verifies results and quality control data for accuracy and reliability.
  • Performs, evaluates, and documents all quality control, preventive maintenance and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Demonstrates computer system proficiency including ordering, resulting, and inquiry functions.
  • Ensures proper utilization and preparation of reagents and supplies.
  • Communicates critical results to the patient caregiver.
  • Regularly reports all unusual findings to the immediate supervisor.
  • Regularly reports work activities and pending work to the oncoming technologist.
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
  • Assumes one or more of the following responsibilities under the supervision of the Medical Technologist or Team Leader: supply/reagent ordering or preparation, primary operator of minor instrumentation, projects, or teaching/training.
  • Performs specimen collection procedures, specimen receiving and processing as required.
  • Answers the telephone and greets guests to the department.
  • Maintains current job knowledge in order to effectively instruct students or other personnel.
  • Responsible for an active role in the laboratory quality improvement program including performance and evaluation of key quality indicators.
  • Follows the established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.
  • Practices infection control and safety practices and keeps a clean and organized work area.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient record, hospital and departmental matters at all times.
  • Perform other duties as directed under supervision of Medical Technologist or Team Leader.
