The Medical Lab Technician performs essential duties in the Laboratory Medicine department, focusing on Chemistry. This per diem role involves prioritizing STAT and routine samples, ensuring accurate specimen identification and labeling, and verifying sample appropriateness for requested testing. The technician is responsible for performing tests within defined time periods, resolving specimen issues, and maintaining proper sample storage. They also perform instrument maintenance, recognize and report equipment or methodology problems, and conduct Quality Control activities. The role includes interpreting analytic procedures, maintaining accurate records, and investigating aberrant test results. Transcription of results into the LIS system, appending appropriate comments, and notifying relevant personnel of Critical Alert Values and required call backs are key responsibilities. The technician must maintain proficiency in LIS functions, document reagent receipt, and manage blood inventories (in Blood Bank only). They assist other sections as needed, participate in quality improvement activities, and may perform specimen collection. Maintaining competency documentation, attending continuing education, and participating in staff meetings are also required. The role supports the education of students and new staff, and may involve participation in committees. Effective communication with colleagues, supervisors, and Medical Directors regarding laboratory information is crucial. The technician must work cooperatively, report incidents, maintain a neat work area, and plan/prioritize tasks. They utilize hospital values for decision-making and follow infection control and safety procedures. Specific duties in Chemistry include performing manual procedures, automated procedures without operator intervention, automated blood gas analyses, whole blood measurements, and osmolality measurements.
