Medical Lab Technicians perform various tests to analyze blood, body fluids, and tissues as ordered by Healthcare personnel. Under the general supervision of departmental section supervisors and/or lead techs, they precisely and accurately order, perform, and evaluate technical procedures in the different subsections of the clinical laboratory department. This role involves properly collecting blood specimens, ensuring patient safety and consistency with age-specific considerations for all patients (neonates, infants, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics) as well as employees. The technician will receive, process, and distribute specimens appropriately and in a timely manner, and properly store specimens for further testing as needed. They will also assist with the training of new employees and students, maintain equipment and supply inventory, and adhere to laboratory and hospital policies (i.e., attendance, continuing education, dress code, infection control, and patient confidentiality) and procedures. Maintaining knowledge and practices of current regulatory guidelines, and preparing for and participating in processes relating to regulatory agencies such as Joint Commission, CAP, and AABB are also key aspects of this role. Following best practices for infection control in accordance with hospital and regulatory guidelines is essential.
