About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) II is responsible for performing waived, highly, and moderately complex testing as defined by CLIA regulations. This role requires a skill level commensurate with the individual's education, training, experience, and technical abilities. The technician must adhere to all laboratory procedures for sample collection, processing, analysis, and reporting, as well as quality control policies. They must be able to identify and resolve issues that may affect test performance or escalate them to supervisors. The MLT II will perform tests using both manual and automated methods across various disciplines including Hematology, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, and Immunology. Maintenance of instruments and equipment, review of test results for accuracy, and recognition of age-specific differences in expected results are also key responsibilities. The role involves ensuring proficiency testing samples are handled correctly and that collaboration with other labs is prohibited during this process. Venipuncture or capillary puncture may be required for various age groups. The technician will also assist in developing and maintaining laboratory policies and procedures, adhere to all safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources policies, and may be assigned Lead Tech responsibilities in the absence of a supervisor. Other tasks may be assigned by management.

Requirements

  • Current and Valid State License if the laboratory is located in a state where required.
  • Associate’s degree in chemical, physical, biological science, or completion of coursework in a program for MLT.
  • 1 year of hospital laboratory work experience preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • ASCP certification, or equivalent, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform waived, highly, and moderately complex testing as stated in CLIA.
  • Adhere to laboratory procedures for collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results.
  • Follow established quality control policies and procedures, documenting corrective actions when test systems deviate.
  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance and either correct them or notify immediate supervisor, Director, or Medical Director.
  • Perform waived or highly and moderately complex laboratory procedures using both manual and automated methods in Hematology, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology and Immunology.
  • Perform and document maintenance – daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed on instruments and equipment.
  • Review the accuracy of patient results prior to releasing or reporting.
  • Recognize age specific differences in expected results for newborns to geriatrics.
  • Ensure that the testing of proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples and that collaboration with other laboratories is prohibited prior to the reporting of proficiency testing results to the appropriate agencies.
  • May be required to perform venipuncture or capillary puncture on various age groups from newborn to geriatrics.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to all department and hospital policies and procedures related to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources.
  • In the absence of a supervisor, may be assigned/identified as Lead Tech, having responsibility for the section or department during their shift.
  • Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned by the department manager/director.
