About The Position

Under direct supervision performs laboratory work in the areas of phlebotomy, hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, and immunology. This role involves accurate specimen testing, evaluation of results, documentation, quality assurance, and instrument maintenance. The Medical Lab Scientist will also be involved in training new employees, developing and updating procedures, and managing supply inventory. Proficiency in using electronic health records and lab information systems is essential. The position also requires supporting duties such as maintaining a clean work environment and assisting with patient services when needed.

Requirements

Minimum two years’ experience required.
Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science.
Current National Medical Lab Scientist Certification or obtain certification within three months of hire date.

Responsibilities

Perform competent venipuncture procedures including patient preparation, specimen collection, and processing.
Conduct accurate specimen testing, evaluate results, document findings, and manage critical values.
Interpret laboratory results using critical thinking to ensure quality reporting.
Assist lab management in assessing quality control, instrument maintenance, linearity studies, and other quality assurance measures.
Provide new employee training and ongoing training assessment of laboratory skills.
Develop and evaluate processes, writing and updating procedures and forms as necessary.
Perform and document quality control and preventive maintenance for instruments, and troubleshoot problems.
Manage record maintenance, including test requisition, processing, billing, quality assurance, testing, reporting, and documentation of problem-solving with corrective action.
Ensure accurate billing procedures, including correct test identification, patient diagnosis, and understanding of payor sources.
Competently use computer systems, phones, intercoms, fax machines, copiers, and printers.
Identify supplies in short supply, order necessary supplies, and manage inventory, including dating, labeling, and disposing of expired supplies.
Utilize the patient electronic record, lab information system, Google, and other computer technologies for daily tasks.
Ensure lab and phlebotomy areas are free of clutter and sanitized daily.
Fill in for Patient Services Representative when on leave.
