About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) III evaluates, assists in interpreting results, and analyzes blood and body fluids using both automated and complex manual methods following established policies and procedures to ensure the highest quality of laboratory results within established timeframes. This role involves performing high complexity testing, verifying instrument performance, and demonstrating computer system proficiency. The MLS III also ensures proper utilization and preparation of reagents and supplies, assists with inventory management, and communicates critical results to patient caregivers. They utilize theoretical knowledge and critical thinking skills to troubleshoot unusual situations and regularly report unresolved issues to their supervisor. Additionally, they assist in the development of departmental policies and procedures, report work activities at shift change, and respond to technical inquiries. The position also involves assisting in the training of new team members and students, maintaining regular attendance, and complying with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Successful completion of an approved clinical laboratory training internship.
  • Maintains current Florida license as a Medical Technologist certified in the specialty or specialties required by the laboratory section(s) assigned.
  • Two (2) years experience required.

Nice To Haves

  • National Certification such as American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB), or American Medical Technologists (AMT) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates specimens for quality and preanalytical errors
  • Verifies results and quality control data for accuracy and reliability.
  • Performs, evaluates, and documents all quality control, preventive maintenance and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Provides guidance and direction to other team members with less experience.
  • Works independently within broad guidelines, rather than prescribed procedures.
  • Assists with troubleshooting problems and recommending possible solutions.
  • Explains difficult or sensitive information in a manner that is easy to understand.
  • Performs high complexity testing.
  • Verify instrument performance standards including linearity, reportable range and method comparisons
  • Demonstrates computer system proficiency including ordering, resulting, and inquiry functions.
  • Ensures proper utilization and preparation of reagents and supplies.

  • Provide guidance on potential sources of error or interfering substances
  • Utilizes theoretical knowledge and critical thinking skills to help troubleshoot unusual situations; regularly reports unresolved issues to the immediate supervisor.
  • Works independently to accomplish task assigned.
  • Evaluate accuracy of results considering all phases of testing to include preanalytical, analytical and post analytical sources of error
  • Assists in the development of departmental policies and procedures for test performance, quality control, and preventative maintenance.
  • Reports work activities, instrument issues, supply issues and pending work at shift change to the oncoming MLS.
  • Responds to work related technical inquiries.
  • Assists in the training of new team members and students
  • Performs specimen collection procedures, specimen receiving and processing as required.
  • Answers the telephone and greets guests to the department.
  • Maintains current job knowledge in order to effectively instruct students or other personnel.
  • Responsible for an active role in the laboratory quality improvement program.
  • Follows the established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.
  • Practices infection control and safety practices and keeps a clean and organized work area.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient record, hospital and departmental matters at all times.
