About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) II evaluates, assists in the interpreting of results, and analyzes blood and body fluids using both automated and complex manual methods following established policies and procedures to ensure the highest quality of laboratory results within established timeframes. This role works in the Chemistry Department at ORMC and involves evaluating specimens for quality and preanalytical errors, verifying results and quality control data, and performing quality control and troubleshooting procedures. The MLS II receives general guidance, works semi-autonomously, and verifies instrument performance standards. They demonstrate computer system proficiency, ensure proper utilization of reagents, and assist with inventory management. This position also involves communicating critical results, evaluating accuracy of results, reporting work activities, and responding to technical inquiries. Additionally, the MLS II assists in training new team members and students, performs specimen collection and processing as needed, answers the telephone, maintains current job knowledge, follows regulatory requirements, practices infection control and safety, and maintains patient confidentiality.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Associate’s degree and two years of directly related experience may substitute for the Bachelor’s degree (in addition to the requirements listed in the Experience section).
  • Successful completion of an approved clinical laboratory training internship.
  • One (1) years minimum experience.
  • Maintains current Florida license as a Medical Technologist certified in the specialty or specialties required by the laboratory section(s) assigned.

Nice To Haves

  • National Certification such as American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB), or American Medical Technologists (AMT) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates specimens for quality and preanalytical errors.
  • Verifies results and quality control data for accuracy and reliability.
  • Performs, evaluates, and documents all quality control, preventive maintenance and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Performs specimen collection procedures, specimen receiving and processing as required.
  • Answers the telephone and greets guests to the department.
  • Maintains current job knowledge in order to effectively instruct students or other personnel.
  • Follows the established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.
  • Practices infection control and safety practices and keeps a clean and organized work area.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient record, hospital and departmental matters at all times.
  • Communicates critical results to the patient caregiver.
  • Evaluate accuracy of results considering all phases of testing to include preanalytical, analytical and post analytical sources of error.
  • Reports work activities, instrument issues, supply issues and pending work at shift change to the oncoming MLS.
  • Responds to work related technical inquiries.
  • Assists in the training of new team members and students.
  • Verifies instrument performance standards including linearity, reportable range and method comparisons.
  • Demonstrates computer system proficiency including ordering, resulting, and inquiry functions.
  • Ensures proper utilization and preparation of reagents and supplies.
  • Assists with inventory management.
