We're seeking an experienced Medical Lab Scientist / Medical Technologist II with a Core Lab background. This role performs various laboratory tests and procedures while adhering to standard operating procedures on patient specimens to assist in the diagnosis, study and treatment, or prevention of disease. The Medical Lab Scientist may perform tests including standardized and semi-routine biological, chemical, hematological, immunological, immunohematological, microbiological, and serological tests in a research or clinical laboratory. They will perform preventive maintenance on laboratory instruments and calibrate equipment and instruments as required. The role involves operating laboratory equipment and troubleshooting equipment and instrument malfunctions. The Medical Lab Scientist may serve as a key operator for implementation of new equipment and procedures, prepare reagents as needed, and monitor and ensure adequate inventory supply. They may be responsible for ordering and are responsible for quality control. The role assists in gathering data to monitor quality improvement standards and in preparing reports. The Medical Lab Scientist evaluates the validity of acceptable specimens and test results; compares them to previous results and other laboratory data. They identify critical values, confirm and report following standard operating procedures. In complex cases, they evaluate all information and determine whether test results should be released, repeated, or referred to a pathologist. Abnormal or unexpected results are referred to the appropriate individual(s). Accurate and complete documentation of patient information, equipment, and test results is maintained to comply with regulations. Corrective actions taken for out of range test values are documented. A clean, orderly, and safe work area is maintained. The Medical Lab Scientist may serve on the laboratory's safety committee; write and maintain safety and infection control policies and procedures, and ensure correct Safety Data Sheets are maintained. They comply with hospital and laboratory safety and infection control policies and procedures to prevent exposure to infectious materials. The role may monitor staff during safety compliance audits or drills. Required calculations are performed and results are reported by phone and/or computer. Computer reports are audited to ensure that scheduled tests have been completed. Data is assisted in gathering to monitor quality improvement standards and in preparing reports. The Medical Lab Scientist may independently research and assist in development of new procedures; compile and evaluate data and perform statistical analyses. They may be responsible for section's data base files and/or assist in software testing. Staff and students are educated by demonstrating procedures and assisting in orientation and continuing education activities. The role may teach medical technology theory and techniques while providing guidance to lower level technologists; develop teaching plans and student assessment tools; prepare written examinations. Educational in-services are attended as appropriate. Certification is maintained as required. Works with leader to formulate plan for professional development. Participates in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments. May perform venipuncture or capillary puncture to obtain blood specimen. Performs other related duties as required.
