About The Position

Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Medical Laboratory Scientist for its Esoteric Coagulation Laboratory. This role offers a challenging and rewarding career in specialized coagulation testing, which includes a comprehensive menu of complex assays requiring meticulous attention to detail. Testing is performed using both automated and manual methods, such as ELISA, FRET, and semi-automated gel electrophoresis for von Willebrand multimers. The laboratory also conducts platelet function testing, including platelet function screens, platelet aggregation, and Serotonin Release assays for heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing routine and complex clinical pathology testing, instrument management, accurately recording results, and ensuring timely delivery of results. This position holds the authority, responsibility, and accountability for the accurate performance of laboratory test methodologies, which are crucial for patient diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of treatment response. The role involves applying clinical knowledge to achieve accurate test results, leading to quality patient care outcomes. The Esoteric Coagulation Laboratory is located at The Vanderbilt Clinic (TVC).

Requirements

A basic knowledge of coagulation, either clinical or academic.
Exhibit the precise and reproducible pipetting skills necessary for performing assays with multiple dilution steps.
The ability to adapt to a flexible working environment to meet the needs of our clients.
Good communication skills and the ability to interact with colleagues and clients.

Responsibilities

Provides patient-focused care in a clinical setting through the accurate performance of routine and complex tests through the pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic stages.
Performs qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures, including reagent preparation and appropriate quality control, according to required protocols, with precision and accuracy in a timely and efficient manner.
Demonstrates knowledge of techniques, principles, and instruments and their interrelationships as well as physiological conditions affecting test results.
Performs routine and complex clinical pathology testing and instrument management of laboratory services.
Responsible for accurately recording results and assuring timely delivery of results.
Has the authority, responsibility and accountability for the accurate performance of laboratory test methodologies.
Applies clinical knowledge to achieve accurate clinical test results which leads to quality patient care outcomes.
Participate in the development and validation of new assays.
Participate in the validation of new analyzers.
Participate in in-lab educational presentations as well as continuing education.
Maintain documentation to meet state and national accreditation requirements.
