About The Position

Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Medical Laboratory Scientist for its Esoteric Coagulation Laboratory. This challenging and rewarding career opportunity involves performing a comprehensive menu of complex specialized coagulation assays using both automated and manual methods. The laboratory utilizes techniques such as ELISA, FRET, and semi-automated gel electrophoresis. Additionally, the role includes performing platelet function testing, including platelet function screens, platelet aggregation, and Serotonin Release assays for heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. The successful candidate will contribute to the development and validation of new assays and analyzers, participate in educational presentations, and maintain meticulous documentation to meet accreditation requirements. This position is located at The Vanderbilt Clinic (TVC) and requires working every third weekend, with potential for occasional overtime. The role is responsible for performing routine and complex clinical pathology testing, instrument management, accurately recording results, and ensuring timely delivery of patient results. The Medical Laboratory Scientist has the authority, responsibility, and accountability for the accurate performance of laboratory test methodologies, which are crucial for patient diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring response to treatment. Applying clinical knowledge is essential for achieving accurate test results and ensuring quality patient care outcomes.

Requirements

  • A basic knowledge of coagulation, either clinical or academic
  • Exhibit the precise and reproducible pipetting skills necessary for performing assays with multiple dilution steps
  • The ability to adapt to a flexible working environment to meet the needs of our clients
  • Good communication skills and the ability to interact with colleagues and clients

Responsibilities

  • Provides patient-focused care in a clinical setting through the accurate performance of routine and complex tests through the pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic stages.
  • Performs qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures, including reagent preparation and appropriate quality control, according to required protocols, with precision and accuracy in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of techniques, principles, and instruments and their interrelationships as well as physiological conditions affecting test results.
