About The Position

BioDigital, a division of Anatomage, is seeking a Medical Illustrator / Science Lead contractor with a strong background in medical illustration and hands-on experience in immersive media production. This role will lead the scientific direction of a portfolio of active healthcare education projects, owning projects from early scoping through final delivery. The contractor will guide cross-functional teams, ensuring scientific accuracy, clinical relevance, and production feasibility across various experiences like procedural training, mixed reality simulations, multi-user environments, and web-based anatomy education. Clients include medical device companies, surgical training programs, and pharmaceutical brands. This is a part-time contract role with an expected commitment of approximately 80 hours per month, with a well-documented portfolio and structured knowledge transfer provided.

Requirements

  • Background in medical illustration, biomedical visualization, or a related field with strong anatomy or clinical expertise
  • Experience leading science or content direction for immersive media (XR/VR/AR) and QA’ing deliverables
  • Strong understanding of 3D production pipelines and technical constraints
  • Proven ability to translate client feedback into clear, actionable production guidance
  • Experience creating storyboards, production guides, or similar pre-production documentation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • High attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and visual communication skills
  • Access to a Meta Quest 3 device for QA

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with medical device or procedural training content
  • Familiarity with project management tools such as Asana or Notion

Responsibilities

  • Lead scientific planning and direction across multiple concurrent projects
  • Define anatomy scope, interaction logic, and asset requirements
  • Own and develop production guides (PGs) as the scientific foundation for each project
  • Balance scientific accuracy, clinical relevance, and technical feasibility
  • Conduct ongoing scientific QA throughout production
  • Validate anatomy accuracy, interaction logic, clinical relevance, and edge cases
  • Provide structured, actionable feedback to 3D and production teams
  • Ensure feedback is specific enough for execution without additional clarification
  • Escalate discrepancies between client expectations and scientific realities early
  • Translate complex clinical concepts into clear, production-ready direction for a team of 3D artists and engineers to execute
  • Develop storyboards, science briefs, and supporting documentation
  • Guide teams with clear pre-production materials
  • Ensure consistency and clarity across scientific and visual outputs
  • Act as the bridge between clients, account teams, and production
  • Translate client and SME feedback into clear internal direction
  • Collaborate across disciplines to drive efficient workflows
  • Support high-quality outcomes across all deliverables
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously with strong attention to detail
