About The Position

This position provides leadership and supervision to all independent clinical staff and various providers, resolving complex medical issues. The Medical Director will offer clinical direction to the Health Services unit within the facility, communicating staff expectations clearly and aligning them with departmental or unit goals. This role ensures appropriate staff are available and practicing within their competency, coordinating coverage for all independent practitioners and extenders. Additionally, the Medical Director will develop medical staff bylaws, conduct monthly medical staff meetings, and oversee processes for granting privileges, clinical competency assessments, peer reviews, and due process for privilege removal. The position also provides clinical direction and overall supervision of care delivered by the Unit's Interdisciplinary Team, consistent with ACA standards, including physical/psychiatric evaluations, diagnoses, and treatment.

Requirements

  • Medical doctor with a Virginia license
  • Board eligible/certified in internal medicine, family practice, emergency medicine or other similar medical/surgical specialty
  • Graduation from an accredited medical school
  • Considerable active medical treatment and management experience
  • Strong diagnostic and treatment planning skills
  • Strong management and supervisory skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and communication skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively with the nursing department and the allied health professionals in partnership with the Healthcare Administrator
  • Possess a Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire
  • Ability to complete the Virginia Ethics Council Conflict of Interest (COI) filing within two (2) business days of hire and annually thereafter, in accordance with the Code of Virginia § 2.2-3100.
  • Ability to complete COI training within two (2) months of hire and every other year thereafter, as required by Code of Virginia § 2.2-3132.

Responsibilities

  • Communicates expectations of staff clearly and relates them to the goals and objectives of the department or unit
  • Assures appropriate staff are present and providing care within their area of competency, including coordinating coverage of all independent practitioners and extenders.
  • Develops medical staff bylaws and holds medical staff meetings at least monthly and more frequently when needed. This includes but is not limited to processes for granting privileges, clinical competency assessments, peer reviews and due process for removal of clinical privileges.
  • Provides clinical direction and overall supervision of care delivered by Unit's Interdisciplinary Team consistent with ACA, completion of physical/psychiatric evaluations, DX, and treatment.
