About The Position

Founded as Boulder Hospice in 1976, TRU Community Care is a nonprofit healthcare organization serving Boulder, Denver, and surrounding counties. With a mission to affirm life at every step of the journey with illness and loss, TRU provides a continuum of care through TRU Hospice, TRU PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly), TRU Palliative Care, TRU Grief Services, and Landmark Memory Care. The Medical Director is responsible for oversight of medical services for TRU Community Care including hospice and palliative medicine. The Medical Director serves as an integral member of the interdisciplinary teams. The Medical Director assists in educating TRU staff and the broader medical community about hospice and palliative medicine and actively networks with physicians in the community. The Medical Director is a key member of the Quality and Compliance Committee, assuring, in conjunction with the Directors of Hospice and Palliative Services and Director Quality and Compliance, a comprehensive quality assessment performance improvement strategy and program for the organization.

Requirements

  • An active and current medical license to practice medicine in the state of Colorado required before starting work.
  • Board certified in Internal Medicine or Family Practice required.
  • Knowledgeable of Medicare and Medicaid Conditions of Participation.
  • Must obtain and maintain practice privileges in area hospitals.
  • Able to work collaboratively with leaders and members of the interdisciplinary teams.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license, provide proof of Colorado auto insurance (a copy of your “Declarations Page” indicating amounts of $25,000 per person/$50,000 per accident for Bodily Injury; and $15,000 per accident for Property Damage and provide own transportation.
  • Must successfully pass agency-required background checks and drug testing.
  • Must comply with agency health screening and immunization requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Board certified in Geriatrics or Hospice and Palliative Medicine preferred.
  • At least two years practice experience in hospice or palliative care preferred.
  • Minimum three years progressively responsible experience in leadership, management, and supervision of medical services preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Works in a triad relationship with clinical and administrative leaders to provide medical leadership at TRU.
  • Directs the medical services for TRU Hospice and Palliative Care programs, supervising, in conjunction with the CMO, other TRU physician(s) and Nurse Practitioner(s) and assuring appropriate standards of care, documentation and billing procedures.
  • Establishes positive, collaborative relationships with interdisciplinary teams as well as with community physicians and other healthcare providers.
  • Works with the Director of Hospice Clinical Services, Director of Palliative Services, Director Quality & Compliance, and Quality Assurance Nurse in regulatory reviews to assure appropriate response when/if claim denials occur.
  • Collaborates with PACE Medical Director and CMO to align services and care coordination across the organization.
  • Provides medical consultation and support to program services staff and community physicians.
  • Takes responsibility as needed and in conjunction with other TRU Medical Staff for primary medical management of hospice, palliative medicine, and home health patients.
  • Functions as collaborating physician for TRU Palliative Nurse Practitioner(s).
  • Works with the Director of Access Services to help improve access to TRU’s programs.
  • Is credentialed and an active participant on the medical staff of hospitals in TRU’s service area.
  • Assures physician participation in all IDT meetings for all TRU services and programs.
  • Works with the CMO to assure twenty-four hours/day, seven-days/week medical coverage.
  • Works with the CMO, Directors of Hospice and Palliative Services, and Director Quality & Compliance in establishing appropriate clinical policies and procedures and a comprehensive quality assessment performance improvement plan.
  • Assures regular documentation reviews and audits in oversight of quality and compliance.
  • Understands and assures compliance with regulations and standards pertinent to state and federal requirements and Medicare/Medicaid for hospice and palliative home health.
