About The Position

The Hampton–Newport News Community Services Board (H-NNCSB) is seeking a skilled and compassionate psychiatrist to serve as Medical Director at the BJ Roberts Behavioral Health Center, a 16-bed adult inpatient crisis stabilization unit. This leadership role offers the chance to directly influence high-quality care for individuals experiencing serious mental illness and co-occurring substance use disorders. In this position, you'll be part of a supportive, team-oriented environment focused on clinical excellence, patient safety, and balanced workloads that promote overall well-being. Since 1971, H-NNCSB has been a trusted provider of behavioral health services for the Hampton and Newport News communities. Our organization delivers a wide range of programs supporting children and adults facing mental health challenges, developmental disabilities, and substance use disorders. As Medical Director, you will lead the delivery of psychiatric services within the crisis unit. Responsibilities include performing psychiatric assessments, establishing diagnoses, and developing individualized treatment plans. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams on admissions, treatment coordination, and discharge planning, while also contributing your expertise in case reviews and consultations.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) with specialization in Psychiatry
  • Active license to practice in Virginia, including Controlled Substance Registration and DEA certification
  • Board certification in Psychiatry
  • Experience in clinical and/or hospital-based psychiatric settings
  • Strong clinical expertise in psychiatric care, especially in treating serious mental illness
  • Solid understanding of psychotropic medications, crisis response, and co-occurring disorders
  • Familiarity with relevant laws and regulations governing mental health care
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to maintain thorough, accurate clinical documentation
  • Must successfully pass a criminal history fingerprint background investigation, DMV record check, Child Registry search, drug screening test and employment reference checks.
