About The Position

The Medical Director, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine will provide clinical and technical oversight to the clinical section of the assigned laboratory, including test development and modification. This role directs, plans, and coordinates the clinical and technical aspects of the operation of the Clinical Lab section, ensuring effective operation and quality of testing services. The Medical Director defines and implements clinical policy and practices, establishes effective communication between hospital patient units and the Clinical Lab, and provides clinical consultation and collaboration with colleagues on test interpretation and selection. Responsibilities also include maintaining quality assurance and patient safety programs, ensuring compliance with laboratory regulatory requirements, and providing education for pathology residents, medical students, and laboratory staff. Additional duties include performing other assigned tasks, complying with all policies and standards, and adhering to requirements for the safe and secure maintenance of Protected Health Information (PHI).

Requirements

  • Doctorate Degree in biological science or related field
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Record of competence and success in technical and clinical aspects of clinical section and laboratory medicine
  • Thorough knowledge in all areas of laboratory operations including quality control, safety and compliance regulations, regulatory and accreditation standards, and process improvement.
  • Technical expertise with laboratory instrumentation and method validation
  • Knowledge of laboratory information technology systems
  • Applicable certifying specialty board or eligible for such certification.

Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical and technical oversight to the clinical section of the assigned laboratory including test development and modification.
  • Directs, plans and coordinates clinical and technical aspects of the operation of the Clinical Lab section, ensuring effective operation of the lab and quality of testing services.
  • Defines and implements clinical policy and practices in clinical laboratory setting.
  • Establishes effective communication process between the hospital patient units and the Clinical Lab for the efficient transfer of information, both urgent and routine, and on the ordering, status and result of tests.
  • Provide clinical consultation and collaboration with clinical colleagues on test interpretation and selection.
  • Maintain quality assurance and patient safety programs within the clinical section.
  • Maintain compliance with laboratory regulatory requirements.
  • Provide education for pathology residents, medical students and laboratory staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.
  • Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients.
