About The Position

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC Health Department) is seeking a Medical Director for the Bureau of Maternal Infant and Reproductive Health (BMIRH). The Division of Family and Child Health (DFCH) is responsible for creating and overseeing programs, policies, services, and environments that support the physical and socio-emotional health of New York City families and children. The BMIRH, as part of the DFCH, focuses on reducing racial disparities in maternal mortality and morbidity. Requirements

  • Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York.
  • Valid Board Certification issued by the appropriate American Specialty Board in an approved medical specialty.
  • Four years of medical practice.
  • One year of experience in an administrative or supervisory capacity.
  • A combination of education and/or experience equivalent to the above.
  • Must have a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York.
  • Must have one year of medical practice in an administrative or supervisory capacity.

Nice To Haves

  • Board certified in Obstetrics & Gynecology or Family Medicine
  • Master’s in Public Health degree or Master’s degree in related field
  • Minimum 5 years managerial and supervisory experience
  • Understanding of and commitment to sexual and reproductive and racial justice as essential frameworks to guide and implement the work; experience implementing activities applying a reproductive and racial justice lens and approach.
  • Experience working with community partners and/or community-based work.

Responsibilities

  • Providing medical expertise, leadership, and support to the Assistant Commissioner to inform BMIRH initiatives aimed at reducing racial disparities in maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity.
  • Delivering clinical trainings and updates relevant to BMIRH programmatic work, bureau priorities, and goals, staying current on relevant publications.
  • Collaborating with Research and Evaluation staff to support data collection and analysis, inform narrative descriptions of data, conduct literature reviews, and inform program data collection tools and evaluation for maternal health projects, including participation in the Maternal Mortality Review Committee.
  • Collaborating with Maternal/Child Health and Nurse-Family Partnership leadership and staff on home visiting programs, providing clinical guidance, support, and participating in the development and review of medical and technical materials and curricula.
  • Collaborating with the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Equity Unit to provide clinical guidance and support for sexuality education materials, updating them on current sexual and reproductive healthcare practices, and informing SRH policy and advocacy work in reproductive justice.
  • Collaborating with medical directors and leaders within DFCH and other agency divisions to provide expertise in maternal, reproductive, and child health, aligning health goals and priorities for a lifecourse approach.
  • Working with the Chief Medical Officer to support the Coalition to End Racism in Clinical Algorithms and liaise with hospital clinicians and leadership on public health goals.
  • Supporting the work of the perinatal taskforce, providing clinical expertise and guidance for initiatives with community and hospital partners, and supporting the midwifery initiative.
  • Collaborating with other units and colleagues on cross-bureau projects, emphasizing teamwork and effective communication.
  • Representing the Assistant Commissioner and Bureau at meetings, conferences, and other activities as needed, and serving as Acting Assistant Commissioner in their absence.
