About The Position

GeoControl Systems, Inc. is seeking a Medical Data Coder Lead to support the Lifetime Surveillance of Astronaut Health (LSAH) at the Johnson Space Center (JSC). On the Human Health and Performance Contract 2 (HHPC2), the team is at the forefront of safeguarding astronaut health, ensuring human performance, and advancing technologies for human space exploration. The Medical Data Coder Lead will be a member of LSAH, a team responsible for enhancing astronaut medical records by incorporating outside provider records into internal medical records. This role involves applying medical records coding experience to perform health information management and medical coding functions, including ICD and/or SNOMED. The position also provides leadership oversight of one additional medical coder.

Requirements

  • Certified Professional Coder (or CPC-A) or Certified Outpatient Coder (or COC-A)
  • Experience using an Electronic Health/Medical Record in a clinical setting (e.g., not billing only)
  • Three to five years of experience performing data entry of patient medical data and/or medical records management
  • Experience overseeing junior staff
  • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Knowledge of ICD, SNOMED and/or CPT coding systems
  • Extensive knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and abbreviations, and pharmaceutical names and uses
  • Demonstrated ability to read medical record documents, including handwritten physician chart notes, diagnoses, procedures and patient data
  • Ability to work with medical records data efficiently and accurately
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of all medical and personal information to which access has been granted
  • Ability to work effectively in a professional environment, both independently and with teams that may include physicians, allied health staff, information technology specialists, and management
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, EHR software and associated programs
  • Superior written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Highly developed organizational and decision-making skills
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail

Responsibilities

  • Coding medical record diagnoses and procedures using ICD-9-CM/ICD-10-CM and SNOMED-CT coding systems for ease of retrieval for occupational surveillance and medical research purposes
  • Chart review, abstraction, quality control and data entry of medical records from paper and electronic sources into the JSC electronic health record (EHR) and customized database software
  • Review medical record forms for completeness and work with medical providers to obtain missing data
  • Perform quality assurance and incorporation of medical reports from onsite and external physicians and consultants into the EHR and customized databases
  • Provide oversight of medical coder work, support onboarding tasks, delegate daily tasks to one junior medical coder, and provide consistent communication with team leadership on workload, issues, and accomplishments
  • Data abstraction and entry of patient medical data from paper copy and electronic sources into EHR, PACS and other custom databases (e.g., LSAH)
  • Coding of all medical events, including diagnoses and procedures, using ICD and/or SNOMED coding systems
  • Perform verification of data entered into clinical systems; make corrections to databases; make record deletions and changes to the databases as needed
  • Audit generated datasets compiled from various sources against original source data
  • Generate and maintain copies of documents and reports using standard computer software (e.g., Microsoft Office products)
  • Maintain required certifications through applicable continuing education modules
  • Responsible for compliance with all applicable patient privacy and data confidentiality regulations, including but not limited to NASA Privacy regulations, the Privacy Act, HIPAA, etc.
  • Provide weekly status reports of work activities to supervisor
  • Other tasks as directed
