At Stony Brook Medicine, the Medical Coding Educator will develop and provide educational programs related to ICD-10 CM and ICD-10 PCS coding for new and existing staff. This role involves collaborating with department management to set goals for educational activities for all coders. Duties include evaluating, designing, coordinating, and delivering comprehensive training, assessing and providing feedback to coders, developing reinforcement training, and conducting educational sessions based on coder performance. The educator will also perform coding audits, compile and communicate audit results, prepare presentations on coding updates, research updated coding information, and ensure coding staff have ongoing access to updated resources. Additionally, this role provides education to the Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) staff on various coding-related topics, including book usage, identifying comorbidities, the Inpatient Prospective Payment System, Official Coding Guidelines, DRG reviews, and the use of coding software. The educator will also review and respond to coding questions, collaborate with Patient Financial Services on claim corrections, and undertake special projects related to coding, which may include coding, abstracting, and data entry.
