About The Position

The Medical Coder Trainer develops, coordinates, and delivers medical coding and clinical documentation improvement (CDI) training programs. This role analyzes coding performance, identifies knowledge gaps, develops training curricula, and provides education to coding professionals, providers, and clinical staff. The trainer supports DHA coding compliance initiatives through education, mentoring, and continuous improvement activities.

Requirements

Associate degree or higher in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or a biological science; OR University certificate in Medical Coding; OR At least 30 semester hours of college coursework including anatomy/physiology, medical terminology, health information management, and/or pharmacology; OR Successful completion of an AAPC or AHIMA coding certification preparation course; OR Successful completion of advanced military medical service training.
One Professional Coding Certification (CPC, RHIT, RHIA, CCS-P)
One Institutional Coding Certification (CIC, RHIT, RHIA, CCS)
One Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) Certification (AAPC Approved Instructor, CDEO, CDEI, CCDS, CCDS-O, CDIP)
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
Ability to maintain all required credentials throughout employment.
Expert knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, HCPCS, and E&M coding.
Strong understanding of clinical documentation improvement principles.
Excellent presentation, training, communication, and coaching skills.
Ability to analyze coding trends and performance data.
Proficiency with electronic health records and coding software.
Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.

Responsibilities

Analyze ICD, E&M, CPT, HCPCS, and modifier coding performance.
Identify coding knowledge gaps and training opportunities.
Design, develop, and deliver coding education programs.
Create training objectives, curricula, and evaluation criteria.
Educate providers and coding staff on documentation improvement strategies.
Improve coding specificity through CDI methodologies and provider education.
Research coding regulations, policies, and industry changes.
Provide coding guidance and feedback to providers and staff.
Develop reports regarding training progress and coding performance improvements.
Support coding compliance initiatives and DHA productivity standards.
Collaborate with coding auditors, coders, compliance specialists, and healthcare leadership.
