About The Position

The Medical Assistant (MA) will work in Internal Medicine at the Morton Grove location. This is a full-time position with a 40-hour work week. The role involves providing patient care, performing various clinical tasks, assisting providers with procedures, handling lab duties, administering medications and vaccines, and maintaining a clean and stocked work environment. The MA must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills appropriate for the age of the patients served and possess an understanding of growth and development principles. Travel to sister sites may be expected. The clinic hours are Monday-Thursday 8am to 7pm, Friday 8am to 5pm, and Saturdays 8am to 12pm, with clinic closed on Sundays. The position hours are an 8-hour shift Monday to Friday, requiring one evening shift per week and one weekend shift per month. Hours are subject to change based on clinic needs.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED required.
Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or may have completed structured military training which is clinical in nature per DD214 in lieu of a formal medical assistant program or EMT.
Two years of verifiable full-time experience as a Medical Assistant within the last 5 years (for IL/WI Divisions and Floyd & Navicent).
Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification required (for Greater Charlotte and Wake Forest).
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 45 days (for IL/WI Divisions and Floyd & Navicent).
Certified or registered as a CMA or RMA by one of the following National Organizations: American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), National Health Career Association (NHA), National Healthcare Worker's Association (NHCWA), National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA) American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP), National Registry of Medical Assistants (NRMA).
Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) certification issued by the National Health Career Association (NHA) (for IL/WI Divisions and Floyd & Navicent).
RMA certification issued by the American Medical Technologists (AMT) (for IL/WI Divisions and Floyd & Navicent).
Medical Assistant (NCMA) certification issued by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) (for IL/WI Divisions and Floyd & Navicent).
Clinical Medical Assistant Certification (CMAC) (for IL/WI Divisions and Floyd & Navicent).
American Medical Certification Association (AMCA) (for IL/WI Divisions and Floyd & Navicent).
Successful completion of Atrium Health’s competency assessment.
Two years of experience in a clinical practice setting as a Medical Assistant.
Ability to perform routine and complex technical skills, within the Medical Assistant scope of practice after demonstrated competency.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to develop rapport and maintain positive, professional relationships with a variety of patients, team members and physicians.
Proficient computer skills including keyboarding, navigation within a windows operating system, and use of electronic mail with exposure to electronic medical records systems.
Demonstrates customer service skills that support a positive patient experience.
Must sit, stand, walk, squat, bend, twist, crawl, kneel, climb, and reach above shoulders throughout the workday.
Ability to lift 35 pounds without assistance.
Must have functional speech, vision, hearing, and touch with ability to use fine-hand manipulation skills.

Responsibilities

Adheres to Medical Assistant scope of practice, follows all policies and procedures, and maintains training and competency based on area of specialty when providing patient care.
Performs rooming/visit tasks such as vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history, health maintenance, allergy review, and screenings (depression, suicide, falls, social drivers of health, etc.).
Assists provider with or performs procedures as ordered.
Performs lab related duties such as venipuncture, specimen collection/labeling/packing, preparation of lab orders/requisitions, and results tracking.
Point of Care testing (POCT) per standing order/provider order.
Completes Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) approved waived laboratory tests and practice-specific diagnostic testing in adherence to CLIA standards.
Administers medications and vaccines safely following the rights of medication administration.
Performs other duties as assigned such as medication refills, insurance authorizations, safety/regulatory log completion, patient messaging, medication/supply ordering, appointment scheduling, and referrals.
Demonstrates effective and timely communication, teamwork, and appropriate escalation.
Maintains a clean work environment ensuring instruments and equipment are cleaned appropriately.
Ensures equipment and supplies are in working order, and areas are appropriately stocked.
May assist with training and onboarding of other teammates.
May serve as a role champion or on a committee.
Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.
